“It’s over,” the senior police officer assured her gently.<\/p>\n

The officer continued,<\/p>\n

“…he did exactly what he’s always done.”<\/p>\n

“He protected someone who couldn’t protect herself.”<\/p>\n

The veteran smiled modestly.<\/p>\n

“I only did what anyone should do.”<\/p>\n

The young woman gently shook her head.<\/p>\n

“No.”<\/p>\n

“Not everyone would.”<\/p>\n

An ambulance arrived to examine her minor injuries.<\/p>\n

After the paramedics confirmed she was unharmed, she returned to the veteran.<\/p>\n

“I don’t even know your name.”<\/p>\n

“William.”<\/p>\n

She smiled through tears.<\/p>\n

“I’m Emily.”<\/p>\n

She extended her hand.<\/p>\n

Instead, William gave her a warm hug.<\/p>\n

“You remind me of my granddaughter.”<\/p>\n

Emily smiled.<\/p>\n

“Then I guess we’re family now.”<\/p>\n
