Her hands trembling.<\/p>\n

Tears blurred her vision.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can’t accept this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman smiled gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou already did.\u201d<\/p>\n

The waitress looked confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman glanced toward the corner booth.<\/p>\n

The same booth where she had once sat.<\/p>\n

Hungry.<\/p>\n

Alone.<\/p>\n

Afraid.<\/p>\n

\u201cI accepted your kindness twenty years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence filled the diner.<\/p>\n

the woman reached into her purse.<\/p>\n

She carefully placed an old paper napkin on the table.<\/p>\n

Yellowed with age.<\/p>\n

Folded dozens of times.<\/p>\n

The waitress slowly opened it.<\/p>\n

Across the front, in faded blue ink, were five simple words.<\/p>\n

“Then don’t pay… just eat.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The waitress covered her mouth.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou kept this?\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cI carried it everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhenever life became too hard…\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI read it again.\u201d<\/p>\n

A tear rolled down the waitress’s cheek.<\/p>\n

Then another.<\/p>\n

The woman smiled warmly.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne meal kept me alive.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut your words…\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey kept me going.\u201d<\/p>\n

She reached into her briefcase.<\/p>\n

And pulled out a small brass plaque.<\/p>\n

She handed it to the waitress.<\/p>\n

This Booth Is Forever Reserved.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If You’re Hungry, Sit Down.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Your Meal Has Already Been Paid For.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The elderly waitress looked around the diner.<\/p>\n

Customers were already wiping away tears.<\/p>\n

She smiled through her own.<\/p>\n

Then embraced the woman once more.<\/p>\n

Because the little girl she had fed without expecting anything in return\u2014<\/p>\n
