“…came back.”<\/p>\n

The baker covered his mouth.<\/p>\n

“I never thought I’d see you again.”<\/p>\n

She gently hugged him.<\/p>\n

“You gave me more than bread that day.”<\/p>\n

“You gave me hope.”<\/p>\n

Around them\u2014<\/p>\n

neighbors gathered on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n

They watched quietly.<\/p>\n

The woman turned toward the bakery.<\/p>\n

The windows were cracked.<\/p>\n

The paint had faded.<\/p>\n

A small sign reading CLOSED SOON<\/strong> hung in the front window.<\/p>\n

She looked back at the baker.<\/p>\n

“What happened?”<\/p>\n

He sighed softly.<\/p>\n

“The rent kept rising.”<\/p>\n

“My ovens are too old.”<\/p>\n

“Tomorrow is my last day.”<\/p>\n

The crowd lowered their heads.<\/p>\n

Many had bought bread there since childhood.<\/p>\n

The woman smiled gently.<\/p>\n

“That’s why I asked you to leave today.”<\/p>\n

Confusion crossed the baker’s face.<\/p>\n

“Leave?”<\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n

“Because tomorrow…”<\/p>\n

“…this bakery won’t belong to the landlord anymore.”<\/p>\n

She handed him a leather folder.<\/p>\n

Inside were official documents.<\/p>\n

The baker adjusted his glasses.<\/p>\n

His hands shook as he read them.<\/p>\n

The building…<\/p>\n

the bakery…<\/p>\n

the apartment upstairs…<\/p>\n

had all been purchased.<\/p>\n

In his name.<\/p>\n

He looked at her in disbelief.<\/p>\n

“You bought it?”<\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n

“You once gave a hungry child her first meal in days.”<\/p>\n

“Today, I’m giving a good man his home back.”<\/p>\n

The baker’s knees weakened.<\/p>\n

He leaned against the doorway.<\/p>\n

Unable to hold back his tears.<\/p>\n

“I don’t deserve this.”<\/p>\n

She gently took his flour-covered hands.<\/p>\n

“You taught me that kindness isn’t a loan.”<\/p>\n

“It’s a seed.”<\/p>\n

“And yours grew.”<\/p>\n

Just then\u2014<\/p>\n

a group of children walked past the bakery.<\/p>\n

One little boy stared longingly through the window.<\/p>\n

The woman smiled.<\/p>\n

She reached into her purse.<\/p>\n

Placed some money on the counter.<\/p>\n

Then looked at the baker.<\/p>\n

“May I buy bread for every child who comes by today?”<\/p>\n

The baker laughed through his tears.<\/p>\n

“You don’t have to.”<\/p>\n

“I know.”<\/p>\n

She smiled.<\/p>\n

“I want to.”<\/p>\n

Within minutes\u2014<\/p>\n

the old ovens were warm again.<\/p>\n

The smell of fresh bread drifted down the street.<\/p>\n

Children lined up outside.<\/p>\n

Families smiled.<\/p>\n

The baker handed out warm rolls one by one.<\/p>\n

Just as he had years before.<\/p>\n

A little girl in patched clothes stepped shyly to the front.<\/p>\n
