His eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

The waitress gently placed a hand on his shoulder.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou remembered today.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old man smiled.<\/p>\n

Then picked up a small wooden plaque from behind the counter.<\/p>\n

He handed it to her.<\/p>\n

Together, they hung it beside the entrance.<\/p>\n

It read:<\/p>\n

“If you’re hungry, come in. Your meal is already paid for.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Customers stood quietly.<\/p>\n

Some wiped away tears.<\/p>\n

Others walked to the register and paid for meals they would never eat.<\/p>\n
