Still unable to believe she had returned.<\/p>\n

The woman smiled.<\/p>\n

Then glanced at the old ice cream cart.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you still keep it?\u201d<\/p>\n

The old man nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery single day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Slowly\u2014<\/p>\n

he opened a small wooden drawer beneath the cart.<\/p>\n

Inside lay a faded photograph.<\/p>\n

Carefully wrapped in plastic.<\/p>\n

The woman stared.<\/p>\n

It was a picture of a little girl.<\/p>\n

Dirty clothes.<\/p>\n

Tear-streaked cheeks.<\/p>\n

Holding a giant vanilla cone.<\/p>\n

Her eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou kept it?\u201d<\/p>\n

The old vendor smiled softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were my first customer who thanked me with a promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI couldn’t throw it away.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman covered her mouth.<\/p>\n

Overcome with emotion.<\/p>\n

Then she reached into her purse.<\/p>\n

And placed a shiny brass key in his hand.<\/p>\n

The old man looked at it.<\/p>\n

Confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n

She smiled through her tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cA new ice cream shop.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWith your name on the sign.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old vendor’s hands began to shake.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut… I’m too old.\u201d<\/p>\n

She gently squeezed his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen don’t work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust sit behind the counter\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026and keep making children smile.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old man broke down crying.<\/p>\n

He hugged her tightly.<\/p>\n

Because the little girl he once gave a free ice cream\u2014<\/p>\n

had returned to give him something even sweeter.<\/p>\n

A future filled with the same kindness<\/p>\n
