The little girl held the bag of fries tightly.<\/p>\n

The vendor stayed beside her.<\/p>\n

Wanting to make sure she was okay.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

something slipped from her jacket pocket.<\/p>\n

A photograph.<\/p>\n

Old.<\/p>\n

Folded.<\/p>\n

Worn from being carried everywhere.<\/p>\n

The vendor picked it up.<\/p>\n

\u201cSweetheart, you dropped this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl immediately reached for it.<\/p>\n

But the vendor had already seen the picture.<\/p>\n

And froze.<\/p>\n

His eyes widened.<\/p>\n

His hand began to shake.<\/p>\n

Because the photograph showed a much younger version of himself.<\/p>\n

Standing beside a woman.<\/p>\n

Holding a baby girl.<\/p>\n

The vendor stared at the image.<\/p>\n

Unable to breathe.<\/p>\n

Unable to speak.<\/p>\n

The little girl looked nervous.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mommy gave me that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The vendor slowly looked up.<\/p>\n

His heart pounding.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat’s your mother’s name?\u201d<\/p>\n

The little girl’s eyes filled with tears again.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily.\u201d<\/p>\n

The color drained from the vendor’s face.<\/p>\n

Because Emily wasn’t just a name.<\/p>\n

It was the woman he had loved twenty years ago.<\/p>\n

The woman who had disappeared without a trace.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

the little girl unfolded the photograph completely.<\/p>\n

Written on the back were a few faded words.<\/p>\n

If you ever get hungry, find the man in this picture. He’ll help you.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The vendor covered his mouth.<\/p>\n

A sob escaping before he could stop it.<\/p>\n

The little girl looked confused.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy are you crying?\u201d<\/p>\n

The vendor dropped to one knee.<\/p>\n

Tears streaming down his cheeks.<\/p>\n

As he looked into her eyes.<\/p>\n

The same eyes from the photograph.<\/p>\n

The same smile.<\/p>\n

The same face.<\/p>\n

Then his voice cracked.<\/p>\n

Barely a whisper.<\/p>\n

Filled with disbelief.<\/p>\n

Filled with hope.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause, sweetheart…\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I’ve been looking for you my whole life.\u201d<\/p>\n

And suddenly\u2014<\/p>\n

the bag of fries wasn’t the miracle that day.<\/p>\n
