The town stayed silent after the stranger\u2019s words.<\/p>\n

Dust rolled beneath the wagon wheels.<\/p>\n

Coins still spun across the wood from where they\u2019d landed, their metallic rattle fading into the hush.<\/p>\n

The woman under the hood trembled.<\/p>\n

Her bound hands tightened in her lap.<\/p>\n

One of the men in the crowd found his nerve first.<\/p>\n

A thick-necked ranch hand in a brown vest stepped closer to the wagon and pointed at the sack of gold.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou paid for her,\u201d he said with a crooked grin. \u201cThat don\u2019t make her special.\u201d<\/p>\n

The stranger turned his head.<\/p>\n

Just slightly.<\/p>\n

Ice-blue eyes landing on the man like the barrel of a gun.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt makes her untouchable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The grin vanished.<\/p>\n

The crowd shifted back a step.<\/p>\n

The stranger climbed onto the wagon without waiting for permission.<\/p>\n

The wood groaned beneath his boots.<\/p>\n

He stopped in front of the woman and crouched to her level.<\/p>\n

For the first time, his voice lost its edge.<\/p>\n

\u201cCan you stand?\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s breath hitched beneath the hood.<\/p>\n

She gave the smallest nod.<\/p>\n

He pulled a knife from his belt and sliced through the ropes around her wrists.<\/p>\n

The fibers snapped.<\/p>\n

Her hands dropped free, shaking violently.<\/p>\n

Then, with a care that didn\u2019t match the violence in the street around them, he reached up and lifted the burlap hood from her face.<\/p>\n

The crowd froze.<\/p>\n

A bruise darkened her cheek.<\/p>\n

Her lip was split.<\/p>\n

Dust clung to the tears on her skin.<\/p>\n

But when she looked up at him, something in her eyes changed.<\/p>\n

Recognition.<\/p>\n

Pain.<\/p>\n

Disbelief.<\/p>\n

His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n

Like seeing her face had just turned a hard man into something far more dangerous.<\/p>\n

Behind the wagon, one of the men laughed nervously.<\/p>\n

\u201cCareful,\u201d he muttered. \u201cMight not be worth all that gold after all.\u201d<\/p>\n

The stranger stood slowly.<\/p>\n

Turned.<\/p>\n

And looked down at the crowd with Clara still behind him on the wagon.<\/p>\n

His hand rested near the revolver at his hip.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf any man here speaks to her again,\u201d he said, voice low and final, \u201cI\u2019ll bury him where he stands.\u201d<\/p>\n

No one laughed after that.<\/p>\n

No one even breathed too loudly.<\/p>\n

The stranger reached for Clara\u2019s hand and helped her down from the wagon.<\/p>\n

She stumbled when her boots hit the dirt, but he caught her before she fell.<\/p>\n

One arm around her shoulders.<\/p>\n

Steady.<\/p>\n

Protective.<\/p>\n

She looked up at him through tears and whispered his name like it hurt to believe it.<\/p>\n

\u201cElias\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t answer right away.<\/p>\n

He just pulled his fur-lined coat from his shoulders and wrapped it around her trembling body.<\/p>\n

Then guided her toward his horse through the stunned, silent crowd.<\/p>\n

Because everyone in that town understood it now.<\/p>\n

He hadn\u2019t thrown gold on that wagon to buy a broken woman.<\/p>\n
