The little boy couldn’t stop smiling.<\/p>\n

The new jacket fit perfectly.<\/p>\n

The sneakers looked brand new.<\/p>\n

For the first time in months\u2014<\/p>\n

he looked like a child instead of someone struggling to survive.<\/p>\n

The officer smiled.<\/p>\n

Then turned to leave.<\/p>\n

But before he could take a step\u2014<\/p>\n

the homeless father spoke.<\/p>\n

His voice shook.<\/p>\n

The officer turned around.<\/p>\n

Confused.<\/p>\n

The man reached into his worn backpack.<\/p>\n

And carefully pulled out an old photograph.<\/p>\n

The edges were torn.<\/p>\n

The colors faded.<\/p>\n

He stared at it for a moment.<\/p>\n

Then handed it over.<\/p>\n

The officer looked down.<\/p>\n

And froze.<\/p>\n

In the picture stood a younger version of himself.<\/p>\n

Twenty years younger.<\/p>\n

Smiling beside another police officer.<\/p>\n

The homeless father.<\/p>\n

The officer’s hands began to tremble.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo way…\u201d<\/p>\n

The father lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n

Tears filling them.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don’t remember me, do you?\u201d<\/p>\n

The officer looked closer.<\/p>\n

Past the beard.<\/p>\n

Past the years.<\/p>\n

Past the hardship.<\/p>\n

Then recognition hit him.<\/p>\n
