The street stayed silent after Jed\u2019s voice cracked through it.<\/p>\n

Snow drifted between the buildings.<\/p>\n

No one moved.<\/p>\n

Not the mustached man.<\/p>\n

Not the crowd.<\/p>\n

Not even the woman beneath the hood.<\/p>\n

The man behind her let out a short laugh.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou think you can order me around for ten dollars?\u201d<\/p>\n

Jed didn\u2019t answer.<\/p>\n

He stepped forward through the mud instead.<\/p>\n

One slow step.<\/p>\n

Then another.<\/p>\n

His eyes never left the hooded woman.<\/p>\n

The rope in his gloved hand tightened until the leather creaked.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said my name,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

That changed something.<\/p>\n

The smile on the man\u2019s face slipped.<\/p>\n

The crowd shifted uneasily.<\/p>\n

The hooded woman trembled where she stood, hands still bound in front of her.<\/p>\n

Jed stopped just inches away from her.<\/p>\n

Close enough to hear her breathing.<\/p>\n

Close enough to see the way fear was shaking her shoulders.<\/p>\n

Then, with a care that didn\u2019t belong in a street like that, he reached up and untied the burlap hood himself.<\/p>\n

The cloth fell away.<\/p>\n

And the whole town froze.<\/p>\n

A bruise darkened the woman\u2019s cheek.<\/p>\n

Her lips were split.<\/p>\n

Snow clung to strands of dark hair stuck against her face.<\/p>\n

But none of that was what stole the air from Jed\u2019s lungs.<\/p>\n

It was her eyes.<\/p>\n

He knew those eyes.<\/p>\n

Knew them from a summer before the war.<\/p>\n

From a church picnic by the river.<\/p>\n

From the night he promised a girl named Clara he\u2019d come back for her before the world turned cruel.<\/p>\n

Her breath broke the silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou came.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jed stared at her like the years between them had just collapsed in the snow.<\/p>\n

The mustached man found his voice first.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s mine now,\u201d he snapped. \u201cPaid for fair and square.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jed turned his head slowly.<\/p>\n

The kind of slow that made every man in the street nervous.<\/p>\n

His hand dropped to the revolver at his hip.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

His voice was low.<\/p>\n

Flat.<\/p>\n

Terrifyingly calm.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou paid for the rope.\u201d<\/p>\n

The man took one step back.<\/p>\n

Jed moved in front of Clara, putting his body between her and the crowd.<\/p>\n

Then he pulled a knife from his belt and cut the bindings from her wrists.<\/p>\n

She gasped softly as the rope fell away.<\/p>\n

Her hands shook as she pulled them to her chest.<\/p>\n

Behind them, the crowd stood in frozen silence, watching a moment turn into something none of them had expected.<\/p>\n

Because the man who had offered ten dollars hadn\u2019t come to bargain.<\/p>\n

He had come to put a price on a coward\u2019s life\u2014<\/p>\n
