As if it were the easiest question in the world.<\/p>\n

The biker stopped breathing.<\/p>\n

The color drained from his face.<\/p>\n

Around the booth, the other bikers exchanged nervous glances.<\/p>\n

They had never seen him look like this.<\/p>\n

the little girl reached into her hoodie pocket.<\/p>\n

And pulled out a folded photograph.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom said I should show you this if you looked surprised.\u201d<\/p>\n

The biker took it.<\/p>\n

His hands shaking.<\/p>\n

The moment he saw the picture\u2014<\/p>\n

his eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n

It was an old photograph.<\/p>\n

Twenty years old.<\/p>\n

A young Sarah stood beside a bearded biker.<\/p>\n

Both smiling.<\/p>\n

Both wearing matching floral tattoos.<\/p>\n

The biker lowered himself back into the booth.<\/p>\n

Unable to speak.<\/p>\n

Unable to look away.<\/p>\n

The diner suddenly felt very quiet.<\/p>\n

The little girl watched him carefully.<\/p>\n

The biker closed his eyes.<\/p>\n

Pain washing over him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI tried to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice cracked.<\/p>\n

The little girl’s lip trembled.<\/p>\n

For a moment, neither spoke.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

she reached into her backpack.<\/p>\n

And pulled out a small sketchbook.<\/p>\n

Inside was a drawing.<\/p>\n

A little girl holding hands with a man on a motorcycle.<\/p>\n

Above them were four words.<\/p>\n

Me and my dad.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The biker stared at it.<\/p>\n

A tear rolling down his cheek.<\/p>\n

Then another.<\/p>\n

The little girl looked at him hopefully.<\/p>\n

And asked the question she had carried her whole life.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre you him?\u201d<\/p>\n

The biker couldn’t hold back anymore.<\/p>\n

He pulled her into his arms.<\/p>\n

Holding her tighter than anything.<\/p>\n

His shoulders shaking with sobs.<\/p>\n

And through his tears, he whispered\u2014<\/p>\n
