data-end=\"235\">\u201cOpen it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"237\" data-end=\"255\">The latch clicked.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"257\" data-end=\"283\">But the woman didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"285\" data-end=\"310\">Neither did the children.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"312\" data-end=\"414\">They only stood there huddled together, like freedom was just another trick this town might take back.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"416\" data-end=\"458\">The cowboy stepped closer to the platform.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"460\" data-end=\"467\">Slowly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"469\" data-end=\"479\">Carefully.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"481\" data-end=\"537\">So he wouldn\u2019t scare them more than the day already had.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"539\" data-end=\"616\">He looked at the youngest boy, whose lips had gone nearly blue from the cold.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"618\" data-end=\"671\">Then he took off his heavy wool coat and held it out.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"673\" data-end=\"725\">\u201cCome on,\u201d he said softly. \u201cLet\u2019s get you all warm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"727\" data-end=\"772\">The little boy looked up at his mother first.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"774\" data-end=\"817\">She gave the smallest nod she could manage.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"819\" data-end=\"856\">Only then did the child step forward.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"858\" data-end=\"980\">The cowboy wrapped the coat around his shoulders, then lifted the second child down from the platform with one steady arm.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"982\" data-end=\"1015\">The woman watched him in silence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1017\" data-end=\"1026\">Confused.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1028\" data-end=\"1040\">Overwhelmed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1042\" data-end=\"1121\">As the last child reached the ground, her own legs nearly gave out beneath her.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1123\" data-end=\"1161\">The cowboy caught her before she fell.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1163\" data-end=\"1185\">One hand at her elbow.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1187\" data-end=\"1200\">Nothing more.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1202\" data-end=\"1242\">Behind them, a man in the crowd laughed.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1244\" data-end=\"1301\">\u201cYou paid seventy dollars for five extra mouths to feed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1303\" data-end=\"1357\">The cowboy turned his head just enough to look at him.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1359\" data-end=\"1393\">Snow clung to the brim of his hat.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1395\" data-end=\"1423\">His eyes were flat and cold.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1425\" data-end=\"1512\">\u201cI paid seventy dollars,\u201d he said quietly, \u201cbecause your town forgot what mercy costs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1514\" data-end=\"1535\">No one answered that.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1537\" data-end=\"1550\">No one dared.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1552\" data-end=\"1597\">He turned back to the woman and the children.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1599\" data-end=\"1701\">\u201cMy wagon\u2019s by the church,\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s soup on the stove at my place and blankets in the back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1703\" data-end=\"1757\">The woman stared at him, tears freezing on her lashes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1759\" data-end=\"1796\">Her voice shook when it finally came.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1798\" data-end=\"1853\">\u201cWhy would you do this for people you don\u2019t even know?\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1855\" data-end=\"1916\">The cowboy looked at the children gathered around her skirts.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1918\" data-end=\"1936\">Then met her eyes.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1938\" data-end=\"1996\">And for the first time, something in his expression broke.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1998\" data-end=\"2012\">Just a little.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2014\" data-end=\"2087\">\u201cBecause once,\u201d he said, voice low, \u201csomeone should\u2019ve done it for mine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2089\" data-end=\"2117\">The square went still again.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2119\" data-end=\"2145\">The woman\u2019s breath caught.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2147\" data-end=\"2199\">And as the cowboy led them through the falling snow\u2014<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2201\" data-end=\"2224\">the town kept watching.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2226\" data-end=\"2275\">But now they weren\u2019t watching a woman being sold.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2277\" data-end=\"2356\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">They were watching a broken man carry home the family
