The man smirked.<\/p>\n

Then pulled a folded paper from inside his coat.<\/p>\n

He held it up for the whole crowd to see.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause I\u2019m the one who paid to have her brought here.\u201d<\/p>\n

A murmur spread through the square.<\/p>\n

The cowboy\u2019s expression darkened.<\/p>\n

He took the paper and opened it.<\/p>\n

His jaw tightened the moment he read the signature at the bottom.<\/p>\n

Not a sheriff\u2019s mark.<\/p>\n

Not a judge\u2019s seal.<\/p>\n

A ranch brand.<\/p>\n

The woman saw his face change and began to shake.<\/p>\n

The cowboy looked up at her.<\/p>\n

Voice lower now.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid he own your husband too?\u201d<\/p>\n

The question hit her like a blow.<\/p>\n

Her eyes filled instantly.<\/p>\n

His voice stayed calm.<\/p>\n

The man lifted his chin.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe and the child belong to my ranch until it\u2019s paid.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s tears came harder now.<\/p>\n

The baby cried against her shoulder.<\/p>\n

He glanced at the baby.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re leaving before this town remembers whose side it was on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her hand trembled as she placed it in his.<\/p>\n

And when his fingers closed around hers\u2014<\/p>\n

steady, warm, certain\u2014<\/p>\n

Clara stepped down from the auction table with her baby in her arms and tears still on her face.<\/p>\n

Not because she was afraid anymore.<\/p>\n

But because for the first time since losing her husband\u2014<\/p>\n
