He stepped even closer.<\/p>\n
Close enough that only the man near the gate could hear the next words.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou put the judge\u2019s sister in a cage.\u201d<\/p>\n
The town man froze.<\/p>\n
Around them, the townspeople started whispering.<\/p>\n
The woman on the platform stared down at the cowboy, confusion and hope battling in her tear-filled eyes.<\/p>\n
One of the little girls clutched her tighter.<\/p>\n
The cowboy didn\u2019t look away from the man in the wool coat.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow unlock it,\u201d he said, \u201cbefore this town learns exactly what you\u2019ve done.\u201d<\/p>\n
The man\u2019s hands fumbled for the keys at his belt.<\/p>\n
Metal jingled in the cold air.<\/p>\n
One lock opened.<\/p>\n
Then another.<\/p>\n
Finally\u2014<\/p>\n
the platform gate creaked wide.<\/p>\n
The woman nearly collapsed the moment it opened.<\/p>\n
The cowboy caught her before she hit the frozen wood.<\/p>\n
One of the children began crying.<\/p>\n
Another buried her face in his coat.<\/p>\n
The woman looked up at him, breath shaking.<\/p>\n

The cowboy glanced at the children huddled around her.<\/p>\n

And for the first time, the anger in his face gave way to something softer.<\/p>\n

The oldest girl had the same gray eyes as the woman.<\/p>\n
The youngest had her smile.<\/p>\n
These weren\u2019t just children standing beside her.<\/p>\n
They were hers.<\/p>\n
His jaw tightened.<\/p>\n
Voice quieter now.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause I buried my wife five winters ago\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked down at the girls holding onto her skirts.<\/p>\n

Tears spilling down her face as the children clung to both of them in the snow.<\/p>\n

the cowboy took off his coat and wrapped it around all of them.<\/p>\n
