His hands trembled.<\/p>\n

The little girl tilted her head.<\/p>\n

\u201cDid I do something wrong?\u201d<\/p>\n

The man quickly wiped his tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice cracked.<\/p>\n

He looked at the piece of bread still resting in his hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were willing to give this away?\u201d<\/p>\n

The child nodded.<\/p>\n

She lowered her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd Mommy always said sad people forget to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those words shattered him.<\/p>\n

Because they sounded exactly like her.<\/p>\n

Exactly like Lily.<\/p>\n

The woman he had loved.<\/p>\n

The woman he had spent years mourning.<\/p>\n

His tears flowed freely now.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat’s your mother’s name?\u201d he asked softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cLily Harper,\u201d the girl answered.<\/p>\n

The world seemed to stop.<\/p>\n

Traffic faded.<\/p>\n

Voices disappeared.<\/p>\n

The businessman covered his mouth.<\/p>\n

Hidden beneath his watch was another red braided bracelet.<\/p>\n

The little girl’s eyes widened.<\/p>\n

For a moment, neither of them spoke.<\/p>\n
