The elderly waitress stared at the woman in the beige coat.<\/p>\n

Slowly, tears welled in her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe little girl with the red backpack?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

The woman laughed softly through her tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou remembered.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHow could I forget?\u201d the waitress replied.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou ate like you hadn’t seen food in days.\u201d<\/p>\n

The two women held hands across the counter while the afternoon sunlight spilled through the old diner windows.<\/p>\n

Customers nearby quietly stopped talking.<\/p>\n

Nobody wanted to interrupt.<\/p>\n

The younger woman reached into her purse and carefully pulled out something wrapped in tissue paper.<\/p>\n

When she unfolded it, the waitress gasped.<\/p>\n

It was an old paper placemat.<\/p>\n

Yellowed with age.<\/p>\n

On the back, written in crooked pencil, were six words:<\/p>\n

“Thank you. I’ll come back someday.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

The old waitress covered her mouth.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou kept that?\u201d<\/p>\n

The elegant woman smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was eight years old.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I meant every word.\u201d<\/p>\n

The elderly woman’s shoulders began to shake.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never thought I’d see you again.\u201d<\/p>\n

The younger woman gently squeezed her hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cI never stopped thinking about you.\u201d<\/p>\n

She glanced around the diner.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe smell of coffee.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe red booths.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe jukebox.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI remembered all of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she looked back into the older woman’s eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut mostly\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Her voice broke.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remembered the first person who treated me like I mattered.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tears streamed down the waitress’s cheeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cOh, sweetheart\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI only gave you dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n

The younger woman shook her head.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou gave me dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou gave me hope.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd when the world had forgotten me\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Her eyes filled.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou remembered I was just a little girl.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence settled over the diner.<\/p>\n

Then the woman smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere’s one more thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

She reached into her coat pocket and placed a small brass plaque on the counter.<\/p>\n

The old waitress frowned.<\/p>\n

Engraved on it were the words:<\/p>\n

Margaret’s Corner<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

“Because somebody had to.”<\/em><\/p>\n

The elderly waitress broke down crying.<\/p>\n

\u201cMargaret?\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou named it after me?\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new booth by the window.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSo anyone hungry can sit there.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd no one who sits there will ever be charged.\u201d<\/p>\n

The waitress could no longer speak.<\/p>\n

She simply embraced the little girl she had once fed.<\/p>\n

Except now, that little girl had grown into a woman.<\/p>\n

And as the sun painted the diner in golden light, the two stood together beside the same counter where decades earlier, kindness had changed a life.<\/p>\n

Because some meals fill the stomach.<\/p>\n

But the ones served with love\u2014<\/p>\n
