The elderly vendor stood frozen.<\/p>\n

His tongs slipped from his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2026\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

The elegant woman laughed through her tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe little girl with the dirty face and the three silver coins.\u201d<\/p>\n

People on the sidewalk slowed as the two embraced beside the old hot dog cart.<\/p>\n

The vendor shook his head in disbelief.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought you would forget.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow could I?\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked at the faded sign above the cart.<\/p>\n

\u201cBack then, I thought I was invisible.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her voice trembled.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you saw me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old man wiped his eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou were hungry, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNo child should go hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman laughed softly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat hot dog saved more than my stomach.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she reached into her purse and carefully removed something wrapped in tissue paper.<\/p>\n

The vendor frowned in confusion.<\/p>\n

Slowly, she unfolded it.<\/p>\n

Three old silver coins.<\/p>\n

The same ones he had pushed back across the counter all those years ago.<\/p>\n

His eyes widened.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou kept them?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAll my life,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey reminded me that kindness exists.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old man’s lip trembled.<\/p>\n

For a moment, neither could speak.<\/p>\n

Then the woman placed a folder on the counter.<\/p>\n

The elderly vendor blinked.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe deed to the building.\u201d<\/p>\n

He stared at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou always rented this corner,\u201d she said gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tears streamed down his weathered face.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, sweetheart\u2026 that’s too much.\u201d<\/p>\n

She smiled and squeezed his hand.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe hot dog was the gift.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked around the busy New York street.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026is just me keeping a promise.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old vendor broke down completely.<\/p>\n

And as taxis passed and strangers hurried by, the two stood crying and laughing beside the little cart that had witnessed it all.<\/p>\n

Because decades earlier, an old man had fed a hungry girl for free.<\/p>\n

He thought he was giving away a hot dog.<\/p>\n

But what he had really given her\u2014<\/p>\n

was hope.<\/p>\n

And hope, once planted in a child’s heart,<\/p>\n
