The tire finally firmed up.<\/p>\n

The gray-bearded biker gave it one last squeeze and nodded in satisfaction.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere we go,\u201d he said softly. \u201cGood as new.\u201d<\/p>\n

The little girl smiled through the last of her tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you.\u201d<\/p>\n

But she didn’t reach for the bicycle right away.<\/p>\n

Instead, she stared at him quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou even smile like him,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

Something flickered behind the old rider’s eyes.<\/p>\n

He looked away for a moment, pretending to adjust the pump before sliding it back into his saddlebag.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour dad sounds like a pretty special man,\u201d he said gently.<\/p>\n

The girl nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was.\u201d<\/p>\n

A pause.<\/p>\n

\u201cMom says he went to Heaven last year.\u201d<\/p>\n

The biker’s smile softened.<\/p>\n

\u201cI reckon he still worries about you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The child looked down at her shoes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI miss him every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

The old man nodded slowly.<\/p>\n

\u201cFunny thing about love, sweetheart.\u201d<\/p>\n

He tapped his chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople can leave here\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he tapped his heart.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut they don’t leave here.\u201d<\/p>\n

The little girl thought about that.<\/p>\n

Then she stepped forward and wrapped her arms around his neck.<\/p>\n

The hug caught him completely by surprise.<\/p>\n

\u201cThank you for fixing my bike,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd thank you for making me think about Daddy without crying.\u201d<\/p>\n

The biker closed his eyes for a second and hugged her gently back.<\/p>\n

Just then, the bell above the donut shop door jingled.<\/p>\n

Her mother came outside carrying a box of donuts and froze at the sight.<\/p>\n

Tears instantly filled her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmily?\u201d she asked softly.<\/p>\n

The little girl looked up with a huge smile.<\/p>\n

\u201cMommy!\u201d<\/p>\n

She pointed proudly.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe fixed my tire!\u201d<\/p>\n

Then she added in a whisper loud enough for everyone to hear:<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd he reminds me of Daddy.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mother looked at the old biker.<\/p>\n

He simply tipped his worn cap and smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo charge, ma’am.\u201d<\/p>\n

As he climbed back onto his motorcycle, the little girl called after him.<\/p>\n

\u201cBye, Donut Grandpa!\u201d<\/p>\n

The old rider laughed\u2014a deep, joyful laugh that hadn’t escaped him in years.<\/p>\n

And as he rode off beneath the glowing neon sign, he carried no trophy, no award, and no applause.<\/p>\n

Only the memory of a little girl who had compared him to the hero she missed most.<\/p>\n

And to the old biker\u2014<\/p>\n
