The old biker swallowed hard and knelt beside the little girl.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell,\u201d he said softly, wiping his eyes beneath his gray beard, \u201cif I’m pretending to be Grandpa today, I reckon I ought to do a proper job.\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl giggled through her tears.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrandpas tell stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThat they do.\u201d<\/p>\n

So the two of them sat together on the wooden bench outside the diner while trucks rumbled down the highway and the desert breeze carried the smell of coffee and dust.<\/p>\n

The little girl showed him the old photograph again.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was funny,\u201d she said proudly. \u201cMom says he made pancakes shaped like dinosaurs.\u201d<\/p>\n

The biker laughed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat’s serious grandpa business right there.\u201d<\/p>\n

For the next hour, they shared fries, counted motorcycles, and watched the sunset paint the sky orange.<\/p>\n

People passing by smiled at the strange pair.<\/p>\n

A little girl.<\/p>\n

An old biker.<\/p>\n

And enough laughter between them to heal something neither had known was broken.<\/p>\n

Eventually, her mother stepped out of the diner.<\/p>\n

She stopped when she saw her daughter asleep against the biker’s shoulder, still clutching the photograph.<\/p>\n

Tears filled the woman’s eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m sorry,\u201d she whispered. \u201cShe talks about her grandpa all the time.\u201d<\/p>\n

The biker looked down at the sleeping child and smiled.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo need to apologize.\u201d<\/p>\n

He gently tucked a loose strand of hair behind her ear.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe did me a favor.\u201d<\/p>\n

The mother frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

The old man stared out toward the fading sun.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife and I never had grandkids.\u201d<\/p>\n

His voice grew quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd after she passed, I stopped having much to look forward to.\u201d<\/p>\n

He smiled sadly.<\/p>\n

\u201cGuess your little girl fixed that for an afternoon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The woman covered her mouth, tears spilling freely.<\/p>\n

Then, as the sky turned gold and purple, the little girl stirred awake.<\/p>\n

Still half asleep, she wrapped her arms around the old biker and whispered:<\/p>\n

\u201cGood night, Grandpa.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words nearly broke him.<\/p>\n

He hugged her gently and kissed the top of her head.<\/p>\n

And beneath the warm evening sky, the lonely biker realized something beautiful:<\/p>\n

Some families are born.<\/p>\n

Some are found.<\/p>\n

And some arrive for just one day\u2014<\/p>\n
