across the open desert.

The suited man stopped.

Just one step away from making a very bad decision.

The little girl clung tighter to the biker’s vest.

Her small hands trembled.

The biker never took his eyes off the man.

“You heard me,” he said calmly.

The man’s jaw tightened.

“You don’t understand.”

The biker shrugged.

“Then explain it.”

The man glanced around.

Dozens of Texas Raiders stared back at him.

Unmoving.

Unimpressed.

The confidence he’d arrived with was beginning to crack.

“The girl belongs with her family.”

The little girl immediately shook her head.

“No!”

Her voice echoed across the highway.

Every biker turned toward her.

Tears streamed down her cheeks.

“He’s lying!”

The man closed his eyes briefly.

As if hoping she wouldn’t say any more.

Unfortunately for him…

she wasn’t finished.

The biker knelt beside her.

“Tell me what’s wrong, sweetheart.”

The girl looked up at him.

Then at the man.

Then back again.

“He took my mommy.”

The world seemed to stop.

The wind.

The highway.

Even the birds overhead.

Everything felt still.

The suited man’s face turned pale.

“That’s not true.”

The little girl pointed at him.

“Yes it is!”

Several bikers exchanged dark looks.

The biker slowly stood.

“What exactly do you mean by that?”

The girl wiped her eyes.

“My mommy told me if anything happened, I should find the Texas Raiders.”

The bikers froze.

Every one of them.

Because that wasn’t a name most people knew.

Not civilians.

Not children.

Not unless someone connected to the club had told them.

The biker’s expression changed.

“Your mother knew us?”

The girl nodded.

Then reached into her pocket.

Slowly.

Carefully.

She pulled out a folded photograph.

The paper was old and worn.

The biker opened it.

The moment he saw it, his face drained of color.

A gasp escaped one of the older riders.

“No way.”

The photograph showed a younger version of the biker standing beside a smiling woman.

The same woman in the picture was holding a baby.

The date on the back was seven years old.

The biker stared at the image.

Unable to breathe.

“Sarah…”

The girl’s eyes widened.

“You know my mommy?”

The biker looked at her.

Really looked at her.

The same eyes.

The same smile.

The same stubborn chin.

His heart sank.

Because he knew exactly who she was.

The suited man suddenly took a step backward.

Bad move.

The Texas Raiders noticed immediately.

The biker folded the photo carefully.

Then turned toward him.

“Funny thing,” he said quietly.

“You never mentioned knowing Sarah.”

The man said nothing.

Sweat appeared on his forehead despite the dry Texas heat.

The biker took one slow step forward.

Then another.

“You know why?”

The man remained silent.

The biker’s voice lowered.

“Because if Sarah sent her daughter to find us…”

A pause.

The entire biker club stepped forward together.

“…then she knew she was in danger.”

The man’s confidence finally shattered.

He turned and looked toward a black SUV parked down the road.

The bikers noticed.

And that was all they needed.

Because suddenly this wasn’t a custody dispute.

It was a rescue mission.

Then the little girl whispered something that made every Raider freeze.

“She left me a map.”

The biker turned.

“A map to what?”

The girl reached into her shoe.

Pulled out a folded piece of paper.

And handed it to him.

The moment he unfolded it, his eyes widened.

Because marked in red ink was a remote location deep in the Texas desert.

And written across the top in Sarah’s handwriting were four words:

They’ll kill me first.

To be continued…

The Texas highway stood silent.
