For a moment, only the storm outside could be heard\u2014howling wind and falling snow pressing against the walls.<\/p>\n
Inside, the fire crackled softly, filling the small space with warmth.<\/p>\n
The woman held the baby close, still shaking from the cold and fear.<\/p>\n
The rugged man stood near the door, shotgun now lowered, but still not fully out of his hand.<\/p>\n
His eyes moved between them carefully.<\/p>\n
Not trusting.<\/p>\n
Not relaxing.<\/p>\n
Just watching.<\/p>\n
The baby let out a small sound, breaking the silence.<\/p>\n

The woman noticed and whispered,<\/p>\n

The man didn\u2019t answer immediately.<\/p>\n
He walked toward the fire and added another log.<\/p>\n
Then finally spoke.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou don\u2019t come into a storm like that and expect the world to be kind.\u201d<\/p>\n
A pause.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut you came in anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n
The woman looked down, holding back tears.<\/p>\n
\u201cI just wanted my child to survive the night.\u201d<\/p>\n
Silence settled again.<\/p>\n
This time, it wasn\u2019t sharp.<\/p>\n
It was heavy\u2026 but human.<\/p>\n
The man leaned back slightly, the shotgun now resting against the wall.<\/p>\n
Not gone.<\/p>\n
But no longer aimed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t trust people easily,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s eyes filled instantly.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n
He nodded once.<\/p>\n
No warmth in his expression\u2014but no cruelty either.<\/p>\n
Outside, the storm kept roaring.<\/p>\n
Inside, the fire kept burning.<\/p>\n
