Now,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody argued.<\/p>\n<p>Three bikers moved immediately.<\/p>\n<p>One pushed tables together.<\/p>\n<p>Another grabbed menus.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody laughed anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Tank looked back at Emma.<\/p>\n<p>Held out one rough hand.<\/p>\n<p>Careful.<\/p>\n<p>Uncertain.<\/p>\n<p>Like he wasn\u2019t sure he deserved to.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou like burgers?\u201d he asked softly.<\/p>\n<p>Emma looked at his hand for a second.<\/p>\n<p>Then placed her tiny fingers into it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026Mommy said you liked cheeseburgers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That hit harder than anything else had.<\/p>\n<p>Tank looked away for half a second.<\/p>\n<p>Collected himself.<\/p>\n<p>Then gave the smallest laugh through something dangerously close to breaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess your mama remembered me better than I remembered myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As they walked toward the diner\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the folded letter felt heavier in his vest.<\/p>\n<p>Too heavy.<\/p>\n<p>Because deep down\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Tank already knew.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody writes don\u2019t read this in front of the little girl<\/p>\n<p>unless the truth changes everything.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The parking lot stayed silent.
