Stamped. Official in a way that couldn\u2019t be easily argued with.<\/p>\n<p>His eyes moved across the lines.<\/p>\n<p>Once.<\/p>\n<p>Then again.<\/p>\n<p>The silence stretched.<\/p>\n<p>The horse exhaled sharply.<\/p>\n<p>Behind them, the garden seemed louder somehow\u2014birds, wind, distant creak of wooden baskets\u2014everything filling the space neither of them could.<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy\u2019s jaw tightened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he muttered under his breath.<\/p>\n<p>The woman didn\u2019t react.<\/p>\n<p>She already knew what was coming.<\/p>\n<p>He looked up from the paper slowly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis deed\u2026\u201d he said carefully, \u201c\u2026was never transferred out of the original registry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause it didn\u2019t need to be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That confused him.<\/p>\n<p>His grip tightened slightly on the reins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat are you saying?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She stepped forward into the rows of berries, unafraid of the horse now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m saying,\u201d she replied, \u201cyour claim came from paperwork.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She gestured around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy family\u2019s claim came from time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wind moved through the bushes again, but this time it felt heavier\u2014like the land itself was listening more closely.<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy looked down at the document again.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, his confidence cracked into doubt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think a piece of paper older than mine gives you ownership?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice stayed steady.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d she said. \u201cI think it proves I never lost it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long pause.<\/p>\n<p>The horse stepped back slightly.<\/p>\n<p>Even it felt the shift.<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy slowly straightened in the saddle.<\/p>\n<p>His voice lowered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf this is wrong,\u201d he said, \u201cyou\u2019re standing in the middle of a fight you can\u2019t finish.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She met his gaze without blinking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen check it properly,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause if I\u2019m wrong\u2026 I\u2019ll leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A beat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut if I\u2019m right\u2026 you will.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy stared at her for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then looked back down at the deed.<\/p>\n<p>And for the first time since he arrived\u2014<\/p>\n<p>he didn\u2019t look like a man taking land.<\/p>\n<p>He looked like a man realizing the land might not have needed him at all.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The cowboy didn\u2019t reach for the document right away.
