Never changed her order.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boy looked up. \u201cWhat did she order?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The chef\u2019s expression tightened.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, something like emotion cracked through his calm face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA simple dish,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cOne I stopped making a long time ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He turned and walked toward the kitchen.<\/p>\n<p>The boy hesitated, then followed.<\/p>\n<p>The couple exchanged a glance and slowly stood too, pulled in by something they couldn\u2019t explain.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the kitchen, the air felt different.<\/p>\n<p>Colder.<\/p>\n<p>Like it had been untouched by time.<\/p>\n<p>The chef stopped in front of an old stove that wasn\u2019t used anymore.<\/p>\n<p>It sat in the corner\u2014covered with a thin layer of dust, almost hidden behind newer equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI forgot this was still here,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n<p>The boy stepped closer. \u201cForgot\u2026 what?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The chef reached for a worn metal pan hanging on the wall.<\/p>\n<p>His fingers trembled as he held it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis pan,\u201d he said softly. \u201cShe used to make me cook in it\u2026 even when I said I was too tired.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He gave a faint, broken smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe would say\u2026 \u2018Some dishes aren\u2019t for customers. They\u2019re for memory.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lights in the kitchen flickered once.<\/p>\n<p>Hard.<\/p>\n<p>The chef froze.<\/p>\n<p>Because suddenly\u2014he smelled it.<\/p>\n<p>Butter. Sugar. Warm batter.<\/p>\n<p>Impossible.<\/p>\n<p>There was no food cooking.<\/p>\n<p>But the scent was real.<\/p>\n<p>He slowly turned toward the old stove.<\/p>\n<p>And there it was.<\/p>\n<p>A flame.<\/p>\n<p>Already on.<\/p>\n<p>The pan was already warm.<\/p>\n<p>As if someone had just stepped away for a second.<\/p>\n<p>The boy\u2019s voice shook. \u201cDid you\u2026 turn that on?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The chef shook his head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A long silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>from the far end of the kitchen, a cabinet door creaked open by itself.<\/p>\n<p>And a plate slid out onto the counter.<\/p>\n<p>Neatly placed.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh.<\/p>\n<p>Waiting.<\/p>\n<p>The chef walked toward it slowly, like he already knew what he would find.<\/p>\n<p>When he lifted the lid\u2014<\/p>\n<p>his breath stopped.<\/p>\n<p>It was the same dish.<\/p>\n<p>The one he hadn\u2019t made in ten years.<\/p>\n<p>The one only Emily ever ordered.<\/p>\n<p>And beside it\u2026 a folded napkin.<\/p>\n<p>With handwriting that made his hands go cold.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t stop cooking for me just because I disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The chef\u2019s hand lingered on the photograph.
