It settles somewhere deeper.<\/p>\n<p>She looked at the money on the table.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the pies.<\/p>\n<p>Then at him.<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy still wasn\u2019t looking at her fully now. His hand hovered near the brim of his hat like he was thinking about leaving before the silence got too loud.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou think kindness has a price?\u201d she asked quietly.<\/p>\n<p>He gave a small, humorless exhale.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut here?\u201d he said. \u201cEverything does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wind pushed gently through the street again, brushing dust along the edges of the table.<\/p>\n<p>She reached forward and slowly pushed the money back toward him.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t take it.<\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t stop her either.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t sell reasons to come back,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI sell pie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That made him look up.<\/p>\n<p>Properly this time.<\/p>\n<p>The kind of look that happens when someone says something simple enough to feel like truth.<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t know me,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>She shrugged slightly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know you\u2019re standing here instead of riding past.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That landed differently.<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened for a second, like he wasn\u2019t used to words that didn\u2019t demand anything from him.<\/p>\n<p>The pies on the table sat between them\u2014golden crusts, warm edges, still holding the last breath of the oven.<\/p>\n<p>He glanced at them.<\/p>\n<p>Then back at her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I come back tomorrow,\u201d he said slowly, \u201cyou gonna expect something from me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She shook her head.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A beat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShould I expect something from you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That question made him pause longer.<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy shifted his weight slightly, eyes dropping to the ground like he was searching for an answer that didn\u2019t involve running.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not good at\u2026 staying,\u201d he admitted.<\/p>\n<p>The woman studied him for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>Then stepped a little closer to the table.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen don\u2019t stay,\u201d she said gently.<\/p>\n<p>He looked up, confused.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded toward the pies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust come back hungry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A faint silence followed.<\/p>\n<p>Not empty.<\/p>\n<p>Different.<\/p>\n<p>Like something that had been leaning away from both of them had finally stopped moving.<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy slowly reached for one pie.<\/p>\n<p>Not all of them.<\/p>\n<p>Just one.<\/p>\n<p>He placed the money back\u2014but only enough for it.<\/p>\n<p>The woman didn\u2019t argue this time.<\/p>\n<p>She wrapped it carefully in paper and handed it to him.<\/p>\n<p>Their fingers didn\u2019t touch.<\/p>\n<p>But the moment still changed.<\/p>\n<p>He held the pie like it weighed more than it should have.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow?\u201d he asked quietly, almost like he didn\u2019t trust the word.<\/p>\n<p>She nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He hesitated at the edge of the street, pie in hand.<\/p>\n<p>Then, without looking back, he spoke again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame time?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A soft smile touched her face.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSame time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And as he finally walked away down the dusty road\u2014<\/p>\n<p>it wasn\u2019t the pie he was carrying.<\/p>\n<p>It was the first thing in a long time that didn\u2019t feel like it had to be earned.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The woman didn\u2019t respond right away.
