Uncertain. Like he was speaking to a ghost he had refused to believe in for years.<\/p>\n<p>The boy stood still, hands resting on the edge of the open chest.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t look afraid anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Just tired.<\/p>\n<p>The security guard near the entrance hesitated, unsure whether to step forward or step back. No one gave him an answer, so he did neither.<\/p>\n<p>The older man finally reached into the chest.<\/p>\n<p>His fingers touched the folded American flag.<\/p>\n<p>The moment he lifted it slightly, his hand trembled.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo\u2026\u201d he muttered under his breath. \u201cNo, this can\u2019t be\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>The boy spoke softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy mom said he never came home,\u201d he said. \u201cBut he never stopped writing letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That line hit the room harder than anything else.<\/p>\n<p>A woman in the crowd gasped quietly.<\/p>\n<p>The older man froze again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLetters\u2026\u201d he repeated, almost confused.<\/p>\n<p>The boy nodded and carefully reached inside the chest once more.<\/p>\n<p>This time, he pulled out a small stack of sealed envelopes.<\/p>\n<p>Yellowed edges. Military stamps. Dates written in fading ink.<\/p>\n<p>All addressed to the same man standing in front of him.<\/p>\n<p>The older man staggered back a step.<\/p>\n<p>His face lost all color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never received those,\u201d he said, voice shaking. \u201cThey told me he was gone. Missing.
