The horse broke through the last stretch of the riverbank with a heavy surge, hooves digging into wet earth as rain mist clung to its coat.<\/p>\n

For a moment, neither of them spoke.<\/p>\n

Only the sound of rushing water behind them filled the space\u2014like the river was still deciding whether to reach for them again.<\/p>\n

The cowboy tightened his grip on the reins and guided the horse toward higher ground near the cabin\u2019s edge.<\/p>\n

The woman behind him was still shaking.<\/p>\n

Not just from cold\u2014but from shock.<\/p>\n

Her fingers were locked around his jacket like she was afraid the ground itself might disappear if she let go.<\/p>\n

\u201cStay with me,\u201d he said firmly.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t loud.<\/p>\n

But it was steady.<\/p>\n

They reached a flat patch of land beneath the trees. The horse slowed, steam rising from its wet body in the cold air.<\/p>\n

The cowboy dismounted first, then reached up.<\/p>\n

\u201cCome on.\u201d<\/p>\n

She hesitated.<\/p>\n

Her eyes flicked back toward the river.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought I was gone,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou weren\u2019t,\u201d he replied.<\/p>\n

That was all.<\/p>\n

She finally placed her hand in his.<\/p>\n

He helped her down gently, but she almost collapsed the moment her boots hit the ground.<\/p>\n

The cowboy steadied her by the shoulder.<\/p>\n

\u201cEasy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

She swallowed hard, trying to catch her breath.<\/p>\n

Only now did she really look at him.<\/p>\n

Rough coat. Mud on his sleeves. Calm eyes that didn\u2019t match the chaos she had just survived.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy were you even out there?\u201d she asked weakly.<\/p>\n

The cowboy didn\u2019t answer right away.<\/p>\n

He glanced back at the river.<\/p>\n

At the current still roaring like it hadn\u2019t finished telling its story.<\/p>\n

\u201cI heard you before I saw you,\u201d he said finally.<\/p>\n

Her brow tightened. \u201cThat\u2019s impossible. I was underwater.\u201d<\/p>\n

He nodded once.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

A silence stretched between them.<\/p>\n

Heavy.<\/p>\n

Then he reached into his coat and pulled something out.<\/p>\n

A small leather strap.<\/p>\n

Worn. Old.<\/p>\n

Attached to it was a name tag\u2014partially scratched, but still readable.<\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s face changed instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s mine\u2026\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

The cowboy studied her reaction.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo it is you,\u201d he said quietly.<\/p>\n

Her voice trembled. \u201cWhere did you get that?\u201d<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t answer immediately.<\/p>\n

Instead, he looked toward the cabin in the distance\u2014the only structure breaking the endless forest line.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat river doesn\u2019t just take things,\u201d he said. \u201cIt keeps them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her breath caught.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat does that mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

The cowboy finally met her eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt means you didn\u2019t wash up here by accident.\u201d<\/p>\n

A low roll of thunder echoed far behind them, even though the rain was starting to ease.<\/p>\n

And for the first time\u2014<\/p>\n

she realized the river hadn\u2019t been trying to drown her.<\/p>\n
