The biker stopped mid-step.<\/p>\n

Not because she called him anything\u2014<\/p>\n

He slowly turned his head slightly, just enough to see her still hugging the repaired bicycle like it was something fragile and alive.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour dad\u2026\u201d he repeated quietly.<\/p>\n

The girl nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe used to fix my bike too.\u201d<\/p>\n

A pause settled between them, filled only by the distant crackle of neon and the diner door swinging open somewhere behind them.<\/p>\n

The biker looked down at his hands.<\/p>\n

Grease-stained. Rough. Familiar.<\/p>\n

Like they remembered more than his mind wanted to.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat happened to him?\u201d he asked, without looking at her.<\/p>\n

The girl hesitated.<\/p>\n

The biker exhaled slowly, as if that answer weighed more than she understood.<\/p>\n

He reached into his vest pocket, pulled out a small worn cloth, and wiped his hands again\u2014slower this time.<\/p>\n

Then he walked back toward his Harley.<\/p>\n

But he didn\u2019t start it immediately.<\/p>\n

Instead, he sat for a moment, engine silent, neon reflecting off chrome.<\/p>\n

Behind him, the girl called out softly:<\/p>\n
