The little girl stood motionless.<\/p>\n

The piece of bread still resting in the man’s trembling hand.<\/p>\n

A chilly breeze swept between the old buildings.<\/p>\n

For a moment\u2014<\/p>\n

neither of them spoke.<\/p>\n

The bruised man stared at her.<\/p>\n

Waiting.<\/p>\n

Hoping.<\/p>\n

Fearing the answer all at once.<\/p>\n

The little girl tilted her head.<\/p>\n

Confused by the question.<\/p>\n

Then she smiled softly.<\/p>\n

“My name is Emma.”<\/p>\n

The man’s heart pounded.<\/p>\n

His eyes filled with fresh tears.<\/p>\n

Slowly\u2014<\/p>\n

he swallowed hard.<\/p>\n

“What is your mother’s name?”<\/p>\n

The girl looked down briefly.<\/p>\n

Then answered without hesitation.<\/p>\n

“Sarah.”<\/p>\n

The bread slipped from the man’s fingers.<\/p>\n

Landing on the cobblestones below.<\/p>\n

His entire body froze.<\/p>\n

The world around him seemed to disappear.<\/p>\n

Only one name remained.<\/p>\n

Sarah.<\/p>\n

The name he had carried in his heart for years.<\/p>\n

The name he thought he would never hear again.<\/p>\n

The little girl stepped closer.<\/p>\n

Concern filling her eyes.<\/p>\n

“Mister… are you okay?”<\/p>\n

The man struggled to breathe.<\/p>\n

His bruised hands shook uncontrollably.<\/p>\n

Then he reached into the inside pocket of his torn jacket.<\/p>\n

Slowly\u2014<\/p>\n

he pulled out an old photograph.<\/p>\n

The edges were worn.<\/p>\n

The image faded with age.<\/p>\n

He held it toward the girl.<\/p>\n

Her eyes widened instantly.<\/p>\n

“That’s my mommy!”<\/p>\n

The man closed his eyes.<\/p>\n

Tears rolled freely down his face.<\/p>\n

Because standing beside the younger Sarah in the photograph\u2014<\/p>\n

was him.<\/p>\n

Young.<\/p>\n

Happy.<\/p>\n

Smiling.<\/p>\n

Before everything had fallen apart.<\/p>\n

Before he had disappeared.<\/p>\n

Before someone had made sure he never returned.<\/p>\n

The little girl’s mouth slowly fell open.<\/p>\n

She looked at the photograph.<\/p>\n

Then at the man.<\/p>\n

“You know my mommy?”<\/p>\n

The man’s voice cracked.<\/p>\n

Barely audible.<\/p>\n

“I loved your mommy.”<\/p>\n

The little girl froze.<\/p>\n

A strange silence settled between them.<\/p>\n

Then suddenly\u2014<\/p>\n

a black luxury sedan screeched to a stop beside the street.<\/p>\n

Its tires echoed against the cobblestones.<\/p>\n

The man’s expression changed instantly.<\/p>\n

Fear replaced emotion.<\/p>\n

The rear door opened.<\/p>\n

Two men in dark suits stepped out.<\/p>\n

Cold eyes.<\/p>\n

Hard faces.<\/p>\n

The little girl moved closer to the bruised stranger.<\/p>\n

Unsure why.<\/p>\n

But sensing danger.<\/p>\n

One of the men pointed directly at him.<\/p>\n

“There he is.”<\/p>\n

The bruised man’s face lost all color.<\/p>\n

Twenty years of running.<\/p>\n

Twenty years of hiding.<\/p>\n

Twenty years of searching for answers.<\/p>\n

And now\u2014<\/p>\n

they had found him.<\/p>\n

The little girl grabbed his sleeve.<\/p>\n

Her voice trembling.<\/p>\n

“Mister… who are they?”<\/p>\n

The man looked down at her.<\/p>\n

Then toward the approaching men.<\/p>\n

Then back at the photograph still clutched in his hand.<\/p>\n

His eyes filled with determination.<\/p>\n

For the first time in years\u2014<\/p>\n

he wasn’t afraid for himself.<\/p>\n

He was afraid for her.<\/p>\n

Because suddenly\u2014<\/p>\n

he realized the little girl hadn’t found a stranger on the street.<\/p>\n

She had found the man her mother had been trying to protect her from meeting her entire life.<\/p>\n
