The lunch rush was in full swing at a small retro diner on the edge of town. Red booths were packed, coffee cups clinked against saucers, and the smell of grilled hotdogs filled the air.<\/p>\n
Near the back sat an elderly man with a long gray beard and a worn brown jacket. His clothes looked old, and his boots were covered in dust. Most customers barely noticed him.<\/p>\n
But Emily, a young waitress, did.<\/p>\n
She walked over with a warm smile and carefully placed a hotdog in front of him.<\/p>\n
\u201cHere you go, sir. Enjoy.\u201d<\/p>\n
The old man smiled gratefully.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you, young lady.\u201d<\/p>\n
Before he could take a bite, the diner’s manager, Richard, stormed across the room.<\/p>\n
He looked at the old man with disgust.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat is he doing here?\u201d<\/p>\n
Without warning, Richard slapped the plate from the table.<\/p>\n

Richard crossed his arms.<\/p>\n

For a moment, nobody spoke.<\/p>\n
Then the old man reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small set of keys.<\/p>\n
Attached to them was a keychain engraved with the diner’s logo.<\/p>\n
Richard frowned.<\/p>\n
The old man looked him directly in the eyes.<\/p>\n
\u201cI bought this diner thirty-two years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n
The room froze.<\/p>\n
Richard’s confidence vanished.<\/p>\n

Richard struggled to find words.<\/p>\n
The old man stepped closer.<\/p>\n
\u201cI built this business from nothing. There were days when I looked exactly like the man you saw sitting at that table.\u201d<\/p>\n
A heavy silence filled the diner.<\/p>\n
Then he turned to Emily.<\/p>\n
\u201cThank you for treating me with respect.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily smiled nervously.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was just doing my job.\u201d<\/p>\n
The owner shook his head.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo. You were doing something more important.\u201d<\/p>\n
He looked around the room.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou were treating another human being with dignity.\u201d<\/p>\n
Richard lowered his head in shame.<\/p>\n
As security escorted him out, the owner sat back down.<\/p>\n
Emily brought him a fresh meal.<\/p>\n
This time, the entire diner applauded.<\/p>\n
The owner smiled and looked around the room.<\/p>\n
