Soft golden-hour sunlight bathed a busy roadside gas station in warm amber light.<\/p>\n

Cars came and went.<\/p>\n

Engines hummed softly.<\/p>\n

Near gas pump number seven\u2014<\/p>\n

a little girl with blonde pigtails ran across the pavement.<\/p>\n

Purple unicorn t-shirt.<\/p>\n

Denim shorts.<\/p>\n

Pink sneakers.<\/p>\n

Pure excitement in every step.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmma!\u201d<\/p>\n

Her mother called from beside a parked SUV.<\/p>\n

But the little girl had already spotted something fascinating.<\/p>\n

Standing beside a large black touring motorcycle\u2014<\/p>\n

was a massive biker.<\/p>\n

Bald head.<\/p>\n

Thick salt-and-pepper beard.<\/p>\n

Tattooed arms.<\/p>\n

Black leather vest.<\/p>\n

Heavy boots.<\/p>\n

The Little Question<\/p>\n

The little girl stopped directly in front of him.<\/p>\n

Then tilted her head back.<\/p>\n

Looking all the way up at the towering man.<\/p>\n

\u201cMister, are you a bear?\u201d<\/p>\n

The biker blinked.<\/p>\n

Caught completely off guard.<\/p>\n

Then a small smile appeared beneath his beard.<\/p>\n

He leaned forward slightly.<\/p>\n

\u201cGrrr.\u201d<\/p>\n

The little girl burst into laughter.<\/p>\n

Clapping her hands.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are a bear!\u201d<\/p>\n

For a moment\u2014<\/p>\n

the biker smiled too.<\/p>\n

A Memory Returns<\/p>\n

Then something changed.<\/p>\n

The smile faded.<\/p>\n

A distant sadness entered his eyes.<\/p>\n

The little girl didn’t notice.<\/p>\n

But her mother did.<\/p>\n

The biker slowly knelt down.<\/p>\n

Gently wrapping his arms around the child.<\/p>\n

Holding her carefully.<\/p>\n

Almost protectively.<\/p>\n

The mother hurried closer.<\/p>\n

Concern crossing her face.<\/p>\n

The biker lowered his eyes.<\/p>\n

Slowly rolling through his beard.<\/p>\n

The mother stared at him.<\/p>\n
