Freezing wind swept across the snow-covered train platform while steam rolled heavily from the waiting locomotive.<\/p>\n

The sun was disappearing.<\/p>\n

Cold blue evening settling over the station.<\/p>\n

Near an old wooden bench sat a young nurse, shoulders trembling beneath a thin coat.<\/p>\n

A worn medical bag rested tightly in her lap.<\/p>\n

Her hands shook from the cold.<\/p>\n

Passengers hurried past.<\/p>\n

Nobody stopped.<\/p>\n

Nobody asked.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

Heavy boots crunched softly through the snow.<\/p>\n

A rugged cowboy in a dark weathered duster slowed beside her.<\/p>\n

Snow clung to the brim of his black hat.<\/p>\n

He studied her quietly for a moment.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvenin\u2019, miss,\u201d he said gently.<\/p>\n

His voice warm despite the bitter cold.<\/p>\n

\u201cMighty hard night to be sittin\u2019 out here alone.\u201d<\/p>\n

The young woman looked up.<\/p>\n

Tired eyes.<\/p>\n

Embarrassed silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cNurse Montgomery,\u201d she said quietly.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom Philadelphia.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cowboy gave a small nod.<\/p>\n

His eyes dropped to her trembling hands.<\/p>\n

Then to the medical bag she clutched like it was the only thing she had left.<\/p>\n

\u201cA train nurse out here\u2019s worth more than gold,\u201d he said softly.<\/p>\n

A pause.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut right now\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

He glanced toward the darkening sky.<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2026you\u2019re gonna freeze.\u201d<\/p>\n

She lowered her gaze.<\/p>\n

Ashamed.<\/p>\n

Quiet.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t have money for a hotel,\u201d she admitted.<\/p>\n

The words barely above a whisper.<\/p>\n

For a moment\u2014<\/p>\n

The cowboy said nothing.<\/p>\n

Just looked at her.<\/p>\n

Then slowly\u2014<\/p>\n

He reached up.<\/p>\n

Pulled the thick wool shawl from his shoulders.<\/p>\n

Warm.<\/p>\n

Worn.<\/p>\n

Still carrying heat from his body.<\/p>\n

Without asking\u2014<\/p>\n

He carefully wrapped it around her shaking shoulders.<\/p>\n

The nurse froze.<\/p>\n

Warmth settled around her instantly.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll wear mine tonight,\u201d he said simply.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo lady freezes on my watch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her breath caught.<\/p>\n

Eyes filling with tears she clearly hadn\u2019t meant to show.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u2026\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat about you?\u201d<\/p>\n

The cowboy tipped his hat slightly.<\/p>\n

A faint smile touching tired eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cMa raised me better than to stay warm while somebody else suffers.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nurse looked down at the shawl wrapped around her.<\/p>\n

Holding it tighter.<\/p>\n

Like kindness itself had suddenly found her.<\/p>\n

Nearby\u2014<\/p>\n

The station lanterns flickered to life.<\/p>\n

Snow drifted softly around them.<\/p>\n

And for the first time that long winter night\u2014<\/p>\n

She didn\u2019t feel forgotten anymore.<\/p>\n

Because sometimes\u2014<\/p>\n

The warmest thing in the world\u2014<\/p>\n
