Security officers immediately turned toward the boarding gate.<\/p>\n

\u201cStop her!\u201d the woman cried. \u201cPlease!\u201d<\/p>\n

The little girl clung to her, sobbing uncontrollably.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe doesn’t know I’m alive!\u201d<\/p>\n

Passengers froze in disbelief.<\/p>\n

One guard grabbed his radio while another sprinted toward the jet bridge.<\/p>\n

Far ahead, the nurse had nearly reached the aircraft door.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

\u201cMa\u2019am!\u201d<\/p>\n

She stopped.<\/p>\n

Confused.<\/p>\n

Two officers approached quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a child asking for you.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nurse frowned.<\/p>\n

\u201cA child?\u201d<\/p>\n

Moments later, she stepped back into the terminal.<\/p>\n

And froze.<\/p>\n

The little girl broke free from the woman\u2019s arms and ran straight toward her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMama!\u201d<\/p>\n

The nurse staggered backward.<\/p>\n

Shock flooded her face.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The child threw her arms around her waist.<\/p>\n

Tears streamed down her cheeks.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou promised you’d come back.\u201d<\/p>\n

The nurse’s hands trembled.<\/p>\n

Her eyes dropped to the bloodstained hospital bracelet around the girl’s wrist.<\/p>\n

Then to the woman in the cream suit.<\/p>\n

And finally\u2014<\/p>\n

to the birthmark behind the little girl’s ear.<\/p>\n

A birthmark she had kissed a thousand times before the child had vanished from the hospital years ago.<\/p>\n

The French passport slipped from her fingers.<\/p>\n

It hit the floor.<\/p>\n

And beneath the bright airport lights\u2014<\/p>\n

the woman who thought she was leaving for a new life suddenly realized\u2026<\/p>\n
