come away from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl didn&#8217;t move.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes never left the dragon.<\/p>\n<p>Girl (softly): \u201cHe&#8217;s waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A nervous murmur spread through the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Waiting?<\/p>\n<p>For what?<\/p>\n<p>The dragon slowly lowered its massive head.<\/p>\n<p>Dust swirled across the arena floor as its enormous neck descended toward the child.<\/p>\n<p>Several spectators screamed.<\/p>\n<p>Parents covered their children&#8217;s eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The announcer backed away in panic.<\/p>\n<p>Announcer (shouting): \u201cGet her out of there!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the sheriff suddenly raised his hand.<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff (firmly): \u201cNobody move.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Something about the dragon had changed.<\/p>\n<p>The rage was gone.<\/p>\n<p>The threat had vanished.<\/p>\n<p>What remained looked strangely familiar.<\/p>\n<p>Almost sorrowful.<\/p>\n<p>The dragon stopped only a few feet from the girl.<\/p>\n<p>Its enormous golden eye reflected her tiny figure.<\/p>\n<p>For a long moment, neither moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>The girl slowly reached into the pocket of her red dress.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd watched in complete silence.<\/p>\n<p>She pulled out a small silver pendant hanging from a worn leather cord.<\/p>\n<p>Sunlight struck the metal.<\/p>\n<p>The dragon instantly froze.<\/p>\n<p>Its pupils narrowed.<\/p>\n<p>A deep rumble echoed from within its chest.<\/p>\n<p>Not anger.<\/p>\n<p>Recognition.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff&#8217;s eyes widened.<\/p>\n<p>Sheriff (whispering): \u201cOh my God&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl&#8217;s hand trembled as she held up the pendant.<\/p>\n<p>Tears rolled down her cheeks.<\/p>\n<p>Girl (breaking voice): \u201cMy dad told me to give you this if he never came back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The entire arena seemed to stop.<\/p>\n<p>Even the wind felt silent.<\/p>\n<p>The dragon stared at the pendant.<\/p>\n<p>Then slowly\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Very slowly\u2014<\/p>\n<p>It lowered its head further.<\/p>\n<p>Until its massive snout rested gently against the sand before her.<\/p>\n<p>A gesture that looked impossible.<\/p>\n<p>A bow.<\/p>\n<p>Gasps erupted across the stadium.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of people witnessed it.<\/p>\n<p>The king of dragons&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Bowing before a child.<\/p>\n<p>The girl&#8217;s tears flowed freely now.<\/p>\n<p>She stepped forward.<\/p>\n<p>No fear.<\/p>\n<p>No hesitation.<\/p>\n<p>She pressed her hand against the dragon&#8217;s scales.<\/p>\n<p>Warm.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>The dragon closed its eyes.<\/p>\n<p>A deep mournful sound escaped its throat.<\/p>\n<p>The sound wasn&#8217;t a roar.<\/p>\n<p>It was grief.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd fell silent once again.<\/p>\n<p>Then something unexpected happened.<\/p>\n<p>The pendant began glowing.<\/p>\n<p>A faint silver light pulsed from within it.<\/p>\n<p>The dragon immediately lifted its head.<\/p>\n<p>The light grew brighter.<\/p>\n<p>The girl looked down in shock.<\/p>\n<p>Inside the pendant was a tiny folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden for years.<\/p>\n<p>With trembling fingers, she opened it.<\/p>\n<p>The arena watched.<\/p>\n<p>The note contained only one sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Written in faded ink.<\/p>\n<p>Her father&#8217;s handwriting.<\/p>\n<p>The girl read it aloud through tears.<\/p>\n<p>Girl (crying): \u201cIf he bows&#8230; follow him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>The dragon rose to its full height.<\/p>\n<p>Dust rolled across the arena.<\/p>\n<p>Its giant wings unfolded for the first time.<\/p>\n<p>The shadow of the creature stretched across the entire stadium.<\/p>\n<p>Then the dragon turned.<\/p>\n<p>Not toward the crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Not toward the mountains.<\/p>\n<p>Toward a distant canyon beyond the arena.<\/p>\n<p>And without looking back\u2014<\/p>\n<p>It took a single step.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>As if inviting her to follow.<\/p>\n<p>The girl&#8217;s heart pounded.<\/p>\n<p>The sheriff stared at the note.<\/p>\n<p>The crowd watched in stunned disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>Because everyone suddenly understood the same thing.<\/p>\n<p>The dragon had not come to destroy the arena.<\/p>\n<p>It had come to find the daughter of the man it had once called friend.<\/p>\n<p>And somewhere beyond the canyon\u2014<\/p>\n<p>A secret her father had protected was waiting to be uncovered.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The arena remained frozen.
