but because everyone nearby had started watching.<\/p>\n

The biker stayed crouched in front of the little girl.<\/p>\n

Still.<\/p>\n

Focused.<\/p>\n

Like the rest of the world had been turned down to a low hum.<\/p>\n

The crumpled bills trembled in her small hands.<\/p>\n

She held them tighter.<\/p>\n

As if letting go might make everything collapse.<\/p>\n

Her voice cracked.<\/p>\n

A truck engine idled somewhere behind them, but it sounded distant\u2014almost unreal.<\/p>\n

Slow.<\/p>\n

Encouraging.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe went to work and didn\u2019t come home last night.\u201d<\/p>\n

Silence.<\/p>\n

The wind pushed dust across the pavement in soft waves.<\/p>\n

The biker\u2019s jaw tightened slightly.<\/p>\n

Not anger.<\/p>\n

Something heavier.<\/p>\n

Concern that had no immediate place to go.<\/p>\n

The girl quickly added\u2014<\/p>\n

\u201cThey said I need money for the towing yard\u2026 but I don\u2019t have enough.\u201d<\/p>\n

She looked down at the bills again.<\/p>\n

Ninety-three dollars.<\/p>\n

Folded.<\/p>\n

Worn.<\/p>\n

Everything she had.<\/p>\n

Her voice dropped to almost nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey won\u2019t tell me where she is unless I pay.\u201d<\/p>\n

That landed differently.<\/p>\n

Even the background noise seemed to hesitate.<\/p>\n

The biker slowly exhaled through his nose.<\/p>\n

Then stood up.<\/p>\n

Not abruptly.<\/p>\n

Not threatening.<\/p>\n

Just deliberate.<\/p>\n

Like a decision had been made.<\/p>\n

He turned slightly toward his motorcycle.<\/p>\n

The chrome caught the sun.<\/p>\n

Then he looked back at her.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou rode here alone?\u201d<\/p>\n

She nodded.<\/p>\n

Afraid of being judged more than anything else.<\/p>\n

He didn\u2019t react the way she expected.<\/p>\n

No anger.<\/p>\n

No disbelief.<\/p>\n

Just understanding.<\/p>\n

He reached into his vest pocket.<\/p>\n

Pulled out a small, worn flip phone.<\/p>\n

Then looked toward the gas station clerk inside the shaded store.<\/p>\n

His voice lowered.<\/p>\n

Calm.<\/p>\n

Certain.<\/p>\n

\u201cCall the yard.\u201d<\/p>\n

The clerk hesitated.<\/p>\n

Then picked up the phone.<\/p>\n

The girl watched, frozen.<\/p>\n

Not sure if she had done something wrong or something right.<\/p>\n

The biker knelt again.<\/p>\n

Right back to her level.<\/p>\n

And gently pushed her money back toward her hands.<\/p>\n

She shook her head quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo\u2014this is for\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

He stopped her with a quiet look.<\/p>\n

Not harsh.<\/p>\n

Just steady.<\/p>\n

\u201cKeep it.\u201d<\/p>\n

A pause.<\/p>\n

Then\u2014<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t pay for your mom with crumpled bills in a desert gas station.\u201d<\/p>\n

The words made her lips tremble.<\/p>\n

Her eyes filled again.<\/p>\n

But she didn\u2019t cry yet.<\/p>\n

She was waiting.<\/p>\n

Waiting for what came next.<\/p>\n

The biker glanced toward the road.<\/p>\n

Then back at her.<\/p>\n

And something in his expression shifted.<\/p>\n

From concern\u2014<\/p>\n

to resolve.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou came to the right person,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

A beat.<\/p>\n

Then softer:<\/p>\n
