The older boy lowered his head.<\/p>\n

The toddler ate slowly, clutching the food as if it might disappear.<\/p>\n

Around them, people continued walking.<\/p>\n

Most never looked twice.<\/p>\n

Then a woman carrying grocery bags stopped.<\/p>\n

She had heard the boy’s whispered plea.<\/p>\n

Just one word.<\/p>\n

“Please.”<\/p>\n

She looked at the two children.<\/p>\n

Really looked.<\/p>\n

The dirty clothes.<\/p>\n

The bruises.<\/p>\n

The hunger.<\/p>\n

Her heart sank.<\/p>\n

Slowly, she knelt beside them.<\/p>\n

“Where are your parents?” she asked gently.<\/p>\n

The older boy immediately pulled the toddler closer.<\/p>\n

Protective.<\/p>\n

Afraid.<\/p>\n

The woman noticed.<\/p>\n

And that told her everything.<\/p>\n

Tears filled her eyes.<\/p>\n

Without another word, she took out her phone and called for help.<\/p>\n

Within the hour, social workers and police arrived.<\/p>\n

The boys were given food, warm blankets, and a safe place to sleep.<\/p>\n

As they prepared to leave, the toddler reached for the older boy’s hand.<\/p>\n

“Are we okay now?” he whispered.<\/p>\n

The older boy looked at him.<\/p>\n

Then at the people finally helping them.<\/p>\n

For the first time in a long while, he smiled.<\/p>\n

A small smile.<\/p>\n

But a real one.<\/p>\n

“Yeah,” he said softly.<\/p>\n
