mysterious man stepped inside.

Rainwater dripped from his dark coat onto the floorboards.

The door remained open behind him.

Wind rushed through the house.

The woman stared at him.

Her face was pale.

Exhausted.

And for the first time since he appeared, the man realized she wasn’t simply frightened.

She was devastated.

Man (carefully): “Tell me what happened.”

The woman lowered her eyes.

Her hands trembled.

She looked toward the twins.

Then toward a closed door farther down the hallway.

Immediately, the man’s expression changed.

He noticed.

The fear.

The hesitation.

The way she couldn’t stop looking at that door.

Slowly, he followed her gaze.

The hallway suddenly felt colder.

Man (quietly): “Who’s in there?”

The woman swallowed hard.

Tears filled her eyes.

Woman (whispering): “Nobody now.”

Lightning flashed.

For a brief second, the entire hallway turned white.

The man froze.

Nobody now.

Not nobody.

Nobody now.

The difference hit him immediately.

A terrible silence followed.

The twins cried louder.

As if they somehow understood the weight of those words.

The man took a slow step forward.

Then another.

Toward the closed door.

Woman (sharply): “Don’t!”

He stopped.

The sudden desperation in her voice echoed through the hallway.

The twins startled.

One began crying even harder.

The woman covered her mouth immediately.

As though she regretted speaking at all.

The man turned back toward her.

His face had grown grim.

Man: “What happened?”

The woman stared at the floor.

Her shoulders shook.

Finally—

The truth began breaking through.

Woman (barely audible): “He came back.”

Thunder exploded outside.

The man stood motionless.

Woman: “After seven years…”

Her voice cracked.

Woman: “He wasn’t supposed to know where we were.”

The twins continued crying.

The storm pounded against the windows.

The man slowly clenched his jaw.

Man: “Who?”

The woman looked up.

Pure fear filled her eyes.

The kind of fear that only comes from recognizing a nightmare.

Woman: “Their father.”

The words seemed to drain all warmth from the house.

Even the rain sounded distant now.

The man stared at her.

Then at the twins.

Then at the closed door.

Understanding began forming.

Something had happened before he arrived.

Something terrible.

Something recent.

A loud crash suddenly echoed from somewhere upstairs.

Everyone froze.

The twins stopped crying.

Just for a second.

The silence that followed felt wrong.

Too complete.

Too sudden.

The man slowly turned toward the staircase.

Man (low): “We’re not alone.”

The woman’s face lost what little color remained.

She shook her head immediately.

Woman: “No.”

A pause.

Then she whispered the words that made his blood run cold.

Woman: “He never left.”

The storm raged outside.

Lightning illuminated the windows.

And somewhere deep inside the dark house—

another floorboard creaked.

Not from age.

Not from the wind.

From footsteps.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Moving toward them.

The twins began crying again.

The woman grabbed them desperately and pulled them into her arms.

The mysterious man stepped between her and the darkness.

His eyes fixed on the staircase.

The footsteps stopped.

A long silence followed.

Then a voice drifted from the shadows above.

Calm.

Familiar.

Dangerously calm.

Voice: “You shouldn’t have come here.”

The man immediately recognized it.

His expression hardened.

Shock turned into disbelief.

Because the voice belonged to someone who was supposed to be dead.

And as another flash of lightning lit the hallway, a figure slowly emerged at the top of the stairs.

Smiling.

The thunder rolled across the sky again.
