The cabin fell silent.<\/p>\n

Snow swirled behind the tall stranger as he stepped fully inside, cold air following him across the floorboards.<\/p>\n

The sharp-featured man frowned.<\/p>\n

“And who are you supposed to be?”<\/p>\n

The newcomer ignored him.<\/p>\n

His eyes settled on the frightened young woman pressed against the wall.<\/p>\n

Then on the two men blocking her path.<\/p>\n

Then on her father.<\/p>\n

Understanding came quickly.<\/p>\n

The stranger removed his gloves slowly.<\/p>\n

“You planning to sell your daughter?”<\/p>\n

The question struck the room like a hammer.<\/p>\n

The father lowered his gaze.<\/p>\n

Shame flashed across his face.<\/p>\n

“We don’t have food,” he whispered. “We don’t have wood. We don’t have anything.”<\/p>\n

The stranger nodded once.<\/p>\n

Then reached into his coat.<\/p>\n

The two men tensed.<\/p>\n

Instead of a weapon, he placed a heavy leather pouch on the table.<\/p>\n

Coins spilled across the wood.<\/p>\n

More money than most families would see in years.<\/p>\n

Everyone froze.<\/p>\n

The sharp-featured man’s smile vanished.<\/p>\n

The stranger looked directly at the father.<\/p>\n

“That covers your debts.”<\/p>\n

Then he turned toward the young woman.<\/p>\n

“And nobody owns her.”<\/p>\n

The room remained silent except for the wind outside.<\/p>\n

The father stared at the coins.<\/p>\n

Tears filled his eyes.<\/p>\n

The young woman covered her mouth, struggling not to cry.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the stranger’s expression never changed.<\/p>\n

He simply looked at the men who had come to claim her.<\/p>\n

“Now,” he said calmly, “leave.”<\/p>\n

Neither man argued.<\/p>\n
