Warm light spilled across the rain-soaked pavement.<\/p>\n

And suddenly, the storm didn’t feel quite so overwhelming.<\/p>\n

A massive biker stepped into the doorway, gray beard dripping with rain as his eyes moved from Rowan to the baby in his arms.<\/p>\n

Then he saw Troy Vance.<\/p>\n

Everything about him hardened.<\/p>\n

Behind the biker, several club members rose from their chairs and moved toward the entrance.<\/p>\n

Troy stopped at the bottom of the steps.<\/p>\n

“Those kids belong with me,” he shouted over the storm.<\/p>\n

Rowan tightened his grip on his sister.<\/p>\n

“He’s lying!” he cried. “Don’t let him take us!”<\/p>\n

Thunder cracked overhead.<\/p>\n

The biker’s gaze never left Troy.<\/p>\n

Slowly, he opened the clubhouse door wider.<\/p>\n

“Son,” he said quietly to Rowan, “bring your sister inside.”<\/p>\n

Relief hit the boy so hard his knees nearly gave out.<\/p>\n

He rushed through the doorway as the bikers immediately closed ranks behind him.<\/p>\n

Troy’s face twisted with fury.<\/p>\n

“You don’t know what you’re getting involved in.”<\/p>\n

The biker stepped forward into the rain.<\/p>\n

For a moment, neither man blinked.<\/p>\n

Then the biker spoke in a voice so calm it somehow sounded more dangerous than shouting.<\/p>\n

“Maybe not.”<\/p>\n

Lightning flashed across the parking lot.<\/p>\n

“But I know scared children when I see them.”<\/p>\n

And for the first time that night\u2014<\/p>\n
