Elara froze at the sound of boots crunching through fresh snow outside the cabin.<\/p>\n

Through the frosted window, shapes formed out of the whiteout\u2014mounted riders, rifles slung low, moving with the quiet certainty of men who expected violence to be answered without question.<\/p>\n

She stepped back instinctively, hand drifting toward her late husband\u2019s rifle above the hearth.<\/p>\n

But before she could reach it\u2014<\/p>\n

A weak breath broke the silence behind her.<\/p>\n

The Lakota warrior had opened his eyes.<\/p>\n

For a moment, he didn\u2019t move. Just stared at the firelight as if trying to remember whether he was alive or still trapped in the storm. Then his gaze shifted\u2014slowly\u2014toward Elara.<\/p>\n

Outside, a sharp knock hit the door.<\/p>\n

Once.<\/p>\n

Then again.<\/p>\n

A man\u2019s voice followed, cold and controlled.
\u201cWe know he\u2019s inside.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elara\u2019s breath caught.<\/p>\n

The warrior pushed himself up slightly, pain tightening his face, but his hand moved first\u2014not toward her, not toward the door\u2014but toward the space between them, as if silently asking a question without language.<\/p>\n

\u201cAre they yours?\u201d he rasped.<\/p>\n

Elara shook her head immediately.<\/p>\n

Another knock. Harder this time. Wood shuddered in its frame.<\/p>\n

The warrior\u2019s expression changed.<\/p>\n

Not fear.<\/p>\n

Recognition.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey didn\u2019t come for me,\u201d he whispered. \u201cThey came for what I saw.\u201d<\/p>\n

Elara\u2019s grip tightened on the table.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you see?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n

The fire popped loudly.<\/p>\n

And for a moment, he didn\u2019t answer\u2014because the men outside began counting.<\/p>\n

Slowly.<\/p>\n

Like a warning.<\/p>\n

Inside the cabin, the warrior finally looked toward the door.<\/p>\n

And said only one thing.<\/p>\n
