Every step looked like effort, like the cold was negotiating with her body for surrender.<\/p>\n<p>But she didn\u2019t stop.<\/p>\n<p>Neither did he.<\/p>\n<p>The man walked slightly ahead, cutting through the snow-covered alley with measured steps. Not rushing. Not wasting energy. His presence felt like a shield more than a guide.<\/p>\n<p>The rifle stayed lowered at his side.<\/p>\n<p>Unused.<\/p>\n<p>But never forgotten.<\/p>\n<p>One of the children stumbled.<\/p>\n<p>A small cry escaped before they could hold it back.<\/p>\n<p>The woman tightened her grip instantly, but before she could speak\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the man turned.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t say anything at first.<\/p>\n<p>Just reached out and steadied the child by the shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Firm.<\/p>\n<p>Careful.<\/p>\n<p>The child looked up at him, eyes wide with cold and fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSorry\u2026\u201d the child whispered.<\/p>\n<p>The man shook his head once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he said quietly. \u201cDon\u2019t be sorry.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then softer\u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re walking. That\u2019s enough.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The words lingered in the air longer than they should have.<\/p>\n<p>The woman glanced at him briefly, something unreadable crossing her face. Not gratitude exactly.<\/p>\n<p>More like disbelief that kindness still existed in places like this.<\/p>\n<p>They continued forward.<\/p>\n<p>The village narrowed into tighter paths between wooden walls. Icicles hung from roof edges like frozen warnings. Wind threaded through gaps in the buildings, whispering in a language only winter understood.<\/p>\n<p>The second child spoke quietly, voice muffled by scarf.<\/p>\n<p>Child 2: \u201cIs it far?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No one answered immediately.<\/p>\n<p>The man slowed slightly.<\/p>\n<p>His breath visible in the air.<\/p>\n<p>Then he said\u2014<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut not forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman\u2019s steps faltered for a moment at that word.<\/p>\n<p>Forever.<\/p>\n<p>She looked down at the children again.<\/p>\n<p>Then tightened her shawl around them, as if refusing to let that idea exist.<\/p>\n<p>They turned a corner.<\/p>\n<p>The wind changed.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead, the alley opened slightly\u2014revealing a broken wooden gate half-buried in snow, swaying gently with each gust.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond it\u2014<\/p>\n<p>nothing clear.<\/p>\n<p>Only deeper white.<\/p>\n<p>The children hesitated again.<\/p>\n<p>The woman did too.<\/p>\n<p>The man noticed immediately.<\/p>\n<p>He stopped at the gate.<\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t force them forward.<\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t speak at first.<\/p>\n<p>Just waited.<\/p>\n<p>Snow collected on his shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>On his lashes.<\/p>\n<p>On the barrel of the lowered rifle.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the woman asked quietly\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Woman: \u201cWhat if there\u2019s nothing there?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The man looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>Long pause.<\/p>\n<p>Then honest answer.<\/p>\n<p>Man: \u201cThen we build something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence.<\/p>\n<p>Even the wind seemed to slow for a moment.<\/p>\n<p>He stepped through the broken gate first.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving footprints in untouched snow.<\/p>\n<p>After a beat\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the woman followed.<\/p>\n<p>Then the children.<\/p>\n<p>One by one.<\/p>\n<p>Each step smaller than the last, but still moving forward.<\/p>\n<p>The gate creaked behind them in the wind.<\/p>\n<p>And the village slowly vanished into white.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead\u2014<\/p>\n<p>there was no promise of safety yet.<\/p>\n<p>No sign of arrival.<\/p>\n<p>Only the certainty of motion.<\/p>\n<p>And the quiet understanding that sometimes survival wasn\u2019t about finding warmth\u2026<\/p>\n<p>but refusing to stop until it appeared.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The snow swallowed their footsteps almost immediately.
