lowered itself further.

Massive head bowing gently before the child.

Not as a predator.

As protection.

Gasps spread through the Viking warriors.

One man during the northern war.

Only one guardian survived.

A wolf large enough to tear armies apart.

A creature sworn to protect the lost heir.

Impossible.

The kneeling woman slowly looked toward the child.

Fear mixing with confusion.

“What is happening?”

The child stared at the wolf.

Then quietly—

without understanding why—

lifted a trembling hand.

The giant beast closed its eyes.

Leaning gently into the touch.

The shoreline froze.

Thunder rolled across the sea.

Then suddenly—

the wolf let out a deep sound.

Not a growl.

A call.

Ancient.

Heavy.

The sound echoed across cliffs and ocean.

And from somewhere beyond the storm—

another howl answered.

Then another.

Then more.

The warriors turned sharply.

Fear spreading fast.

Shapes moved through the snow.

Too many.

Huge.

White.

A what…”

He looked toward the child.

“Who.”

The wolf slowly stood again.

Massive body shielding the child from the wind.

Then—

carefully—

it nudged the pendant with its nose.

The rune pulsed brighter.

Blue light spreading softly across the ice.

Suddenly—

images flashed across the shoreline.

A burning village.

A dying king.

A crying infant hidden beneath fur blankets.

And one terrified woman—

running into the snow with the child.

The kneeling woman gasped.

Hands flying to her mouth.

Because the woman in the vision—

was her.

Twenty years younger.

The chieftain’s face drained of color.

He knew this secret.

Had buried this secret.

Because the child…

was forward.

Golden eyes darkening.

Ancient.

Terrifying.

Protective.

And for the first time—

the child spoke.

Small voice trembling
