2: The Polar Bear Remembered the Man Everyone Forgot

The arena stood silent.

No cheers.

No shouting.

Only the sound of snow drifting across frozen stone.

Thousands of Vikings stared from towering bleachers.

Unable to move.

Unable to understand.

At the center of the arena—

the gigantic polar bear remained perfectly still.

Its massive forehead pressed gently against the old man’s.

Steam drifted softly from its breath.

Warm against frozen air.

The elderly man trembled.

Not from fear anymore.

From memory.

Pain.

Love.

His shaking hand rested carefully against thick white fur.

“You got so big,” he whispered weakly.

The bear let out a low rumble.

Soft.

Almost sad.

Like recognition carried weight too heavy for words.

Far above—

warriors exchanged uneasy looks.

One young Viking frowned.

“What is this?”

An older warrior beside him slowly lowered his axe.

Face pale.

“No…”

His voice barely came out.

“It cannot be.”

The arena ruler stood slowly from his carved throne.

Dark furs shifting against the cold wind.

Eyes narrowing.

Because according to every story—

that bear should have ripped the old man apart.

Twenty winters ago—

the creature vanished into the northern ice after a bloody betrayal.

No one survived.

No one returned.

Yet somehow—

here they stood.

Together.

Alive.

The old man gently scratched beneath the bear’s jaw.

And for the first time—

the giant creature leaned into him.

Like an oversized cub.

The crowd gasped.

Several people stood.

Even warriors looked afraid now.

Because beasts like Varta bowed to no one.

Then—

the old man noticed something.

His hand stopped.

Near the bear’s shoulder—

hidden beneath thick fur—

sat an old scar.

Long.

Ugly.

Familiar.

His face slowly changed.

“No…”

Trembling fingers touched it gently.

He remembered.

The cliff.

The ambush.

The fire.

The moment someone tried to kill them both.

The old man slowly looked upward.

Toward the king’s platform.

And suddenly—

his warmth disappeared.

Only cold remained.

“You told them I died.”

The crowd went silent instantly.

The ruler stiffened.

Expression darkening.

“You should have stayed buried,” he said coldly.

Gasps spread through the arena.

The old man slowly stood.

Painfully.

Using Varta’s massive shoulder for support.

Confusion spread through the crowd.

“What’s happening?”

The old man looked across the silent arena.

Voice rough now.

Louder.

“Twenty years ago…”

Snow whipped harder around him.

“…someone betrayed our people.”

The ruler’s hand slowly moved toward his sword.

Too slow.

Too obvious.

The polar bear growled instantly.

Deep.

Violent.

The sound shook the arena walls.

Warriors stepped backward.

Fear spreading.

Then suddenly—

from the highest bleachers—

a small child’s voice echoed through the snow.

“Grandfather?”

The old man froze.

Slowly turned.

Standing near the stairs—

wrapped in fur too large for him—

stood a young boy.

Bright blue eyes.

The exact same eyes as the old man’s daughter.

The old man’s breath caught.

Because twenty years ago—

his family vanished the same night he was betrayed.

And according to everyone—

there had been no survivors.

The ruler stood abruptly.

Panicked.

“Take the boy!”

Too late.

Varta turned.

Golden eyes narrowing.

Protective.

Dangerous.

Because the bear recognized the child too.

The arena stood silent.
