Rain fell harder across the cemetery as the little girl searched desperately through the mud for the crushed white flower.<\/p>\n

Nobody moved to help her.<\/p>\n

Not at first.<\/p>\n

The widow stood rigid beside the coffin, breathing unevenly as if the child\u2019s presence alone threatened something carefully buried long before today.<\/p>\n

Then the girl finally found the flower.<\/p>\n

Crushed.<\/p>\n

Covered in mud.<\/p>\n

But she still held it carefully against her chest.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mother said he would recognize it,\u201d she whispered through tears.<\/p>\n

A murmur spread through the mourners.<\/p>\n

The priest frowned slightly. \u201cRecognize\u2026 a flower?\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl nodded weakly.<\/p>\n

Then, with shaking fingers, she untied a tiny faded ribbon wrapped around the stem.<\/p>\n

Something fell into her palm.<\/p>\n

A ring.<\/p>\n

Silver.<\/p>\n

Old.<\/p>\n

The widow\u2019s face drained of color instantly.<\/p>\n

Several mourners gasped quietly as the girl lifted the ring toward the coffin.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy mom said he gave this to her before he disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thunder cracked above the cemetery.<\/p>\n

The widow stumbled backward.<\/p>\n

And for the first time since the funeral began\u2014<\/p>\n
