{"id":3466,"date":"2026-05-21T13:31:06","date_gmt":"2026-05-21T08:01:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/storytimes.online\/?p=3466"},"modified":"2026-05-21T13:31:06","modified_gmt":"2026-05-21T08:01:06","slug":"part-2-the-cowboy-refused-to-leave-the-children-behind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/storytimes.online\/?p=3466","title":{"rendered":"PART 2: The Cowboy Refused to Leave the Children Behind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rain hammered the ruined town.<\/p>\n<p>Thunder shook the sky.<\/p>\n<p>Floodwater crashed through broken buildings like a river determined to erase everything.<\/p>\n<p>But the cowboy kept moving.<\/p>\n<p>One arm wrapped tightly around the crying toddler.<\/p>\n<p>The other gripping the frightened boy\u2019s hand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStay close,\u201d he shouted over the storm.<\/p>\n<p>The boy nodded quickly.<\/p>\n<p>Trying hard not to cry.<\/p>\n<p>Mud pulled at their boots.<\/p>\n<p>Water climbed higher.<\/p>\n<p>The little blonde girl buried her face against the cowboy\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>Shivering violently.<\/p>\n<p>Cold.<\/p>\n<p>Terrified.<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy glanced down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re alright, sweetheart,\u201d he said softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re getting out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lightning flashed again.<\/p>\n<p>For one brief second\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the boy looked ahead.<\/p>\n<p>Then froze.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWait\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s our house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Half swallowed by floodwater\u2014<\/p>\n<p>a broken farmhouse leaned dangerously beside the road.<\/p>\n<p>One side already collapsing.<\/p>\n<p>Windows shattered.<\/p>\n<p>The boy\u2019s face drained of color.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom\u2019s still inside.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy stopped instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Rain poured harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boy pointed with shaking hands.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe told us to run\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His voice broke completely now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut she never came out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy looked toward the house.<\/p>\n<p>Then at the children.<\/p>\n<p>Then back again.<\/p>\n<p>The structure groaned loudly.<\/p>\n<p>One more collapse\u2014<\/p>\n<p>and it would disappear.<\/p>\n<p>The little girl cried softly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMama\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy closed his eyes briefly.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking.<\/p>\n<p>Calculating.<\/p>\n<p>Danger everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>Flood rising fast.<\/p>\n<p>No time.<\/p>\n<p>Then quietly\u2014<\/p>\n<p>he crouched to the boy\u2019s level.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou trust me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boy nodded instantly.<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy removed his soaked coat.<\/p>\n<p>Wrapped it around both children tightly.<\/p>\n<p>Pointed toward a nearby church sitting slightly above the floodline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSee that bell tower?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boy nodded again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGo there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The boy\u2019s face changed instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re leaving?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy shook his head once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He squeezed the boy\u2019s shoulder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m bringing your mama back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before the boy could answer\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the cowboy turned.<\/p>\n<p>Charged straight into the flood.<\/p>\n<p>Toward the collapsing house.<\/p>\n<p>Lightning ripped across the sky.<\/p>\n<p>Wood cracked loudly.<\/p>\n<p>Water slammed against broken walls.<\/p>\n<p>Inside\u2014<\/p>\n<p>everything had already begun sinking.<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy forced open the shattered front door.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cM\u2019am!\u201d he shouted.<\/p>\n<p>No answer.<\/p>\n<p>Only rushing water.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>faintly\u2014<\/p>\n<p>a voice.<\/p>\n<p>Weak.<\/p>\n<p>Upstairs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHelp\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy looked toward the staircase.<\/p>\n<p>Half broken.<\/p>\n<p>Barely standing.<\/p>\n<p>Thunder exploded overhead.<\/p>\n<p>Then suddenly\u2014<\/p>\n<p>outside\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the boy screamed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLOOK OUT!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy turned just in time.<\/p>\n<p>A massive tree\u2014<\/p>\n<p>ripped loose by the flood\u2014<\/p>\n<p>crashed straight toward the house.<\/p>\n<p>And the entire building shook violently.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rain hammered the ruined town.
