2: The Dogs Turned Against Them

Gunfire echoed violently through the Montana snowstorm while red emergency lights flashed across the frozen military checkpoint.

Soldiers scrambled behind armored trucks.

Snow exploded beneath boots and bullets.

And in the middle of the chaos—

the wounded female prisoner slowly rose from the ice beside the massive black Belgian Malinois protecting her.

The dog’s teeth remained bared toward every rifle pointed in her direction.

Low growls vibrated through the storm.

“Stand down!” one soldier screamed desperately.

But the military dogs no longer obeyed.

Another Belgian Malinois lunged at a soldier trying to reload beside the checkpoint fence.

The man crashed backward into the snow.

Panic spread instantly across the compound.

“What the hell is happening?!”

The commander struggled beneath the attacking K9 clawing at the ice while blood stained the front of his winter jacket.

“You trained them wrong!” he shouted furiously.

The woman stared down at him through snow-covered hair.

Cold exhaustion filled her bruised face.

“No,” she answered quietly.

“I trained them to recognize monsters.”

Lightning flashed above the mountains.

For one brief second—

every soldier froze.

Because suddenly—

they recognized her.

Captain Mara Vance.

Former K9 Special Operations commander.

Officially killed two years earlier during Black Ridge Extraction.

The same operation the military blamed on her entire unit.

Except now—

standing alive beneath the storm—

she looked like the ghost of everything they buried.

One terrified young soldier lowered his rifle slowly.

“My brother served under her…”

The commander screamed toward him instantly.

“Shoot her!”

But the soldier hesitated.

Because the dogs were doing something impossible.

They were choosing her over armed command.

The lead Malinois pressed protectively against Mara’s side while snow gathered across its black fur.

Its amber eyes never left the soldiers.

Then suddenly—

SIRENS.

A louder emergency alarm exploded across the checkpoint.

Floodlights flickered violently overhead.

One guard tower went dark.

Then another.

A nervous radio operator shouted through static—

“North perimeter breach!”

BOOM.

An explosion erupted beyond the outer fence line.

The frozen ground shook beneath them.

Soldiers turned toward the mountains in horror.

Shapes were moving through the storm.

Fast.

White winter camouflage blending into the blizzard itself.

One soldier whispered fearfully—

“Recon team…”

But Mara already knew better.

Ghost Unit.

Her missing soldiers.

The same team command claimed died beside her during Black Ridge.

The commander’s face drained completely of color.

“No… no, that’s impossible…”

The black Malinois suddenly stepped forward beside Mara and dropped something into the snow at her feet.

A combat knife.

Her knife.

The same engraved blade issued only to Ghost Unit commanders.

Mara stared at it silently.

Then slowly—

she picked it up.

SHINK.

The steel sliced through the cuffs around her wrists.

The broken chains fell into the snow.

Several soldiers stepped backward immediately.

Because suddenly—

the prisoner wasn’t a prisoner anymore.

Wind howled violently across the compound while Ghost Unit silhouettes emerged closer through the storm carrying suppressed rifles and thermal gear.

The military dogs instantly stopped growling.

Then one by one—

they sat beside Mara Vance in complete loyalty.

An entire Arctic checkpoint fell silent beneath the flashing red alarms.

And standing there beside the dogs that still remembered her—

Captain Mara Vance finally looked like the weapon they were always afraid she would become.

Gunfire echoed violently through the Montana snowstorm while red emergency lights flashed across the frozen military checkpoint.
