His silhouette blocked part of the wind, turning the storm into something less direct, less cruel.<\/p>\n<p>The woman\u2014Arthur\u2014didn\u2019t speak again immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Her arms were still locked around the children, but the tension in her shoulders had shifted. The nearest streetlight flickered once, casting a weak halo over the snow.<\/p>\n<p>Then he looked back at her.<\/p>\n<p>Victor: \u201cWhere did you come from?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s gaze dropped again.<\/p>\n<p>Long silence.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>Arthur (whisper): \u201cNowhere they\u2019ll look.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That answer landed heavier than the cold.<\/p>\n<p>Victor didn\u2019t respond right away.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, he slowly reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small device\u2014old, scratched, practical. He pressed a single button.<\/p>\n<p>A faint light blinked.<\/p>\n<p>Not loud.<\/p>\n<p>Not dramatic.<\/p>\n<p>Just\u2026 certain.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur watched it with confusion, but didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n<p>Victor spoke again, quieter this time.<\/p>\n<p>Victor: \u201cThey don\u2019t get to decide that anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A distant sound echoed through the park.<\/p>\n<p>Not footsteps this time.<\/p>\n<p>Something deeper.<\/p>\n<p>Faint engine hum.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur tensed instinctively, tightening her hold on the children.<\/p>\n<p>Victor noticed immediately and shook his head once.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo,\u201d he said calmly. \u201cNot them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He looked toward the far edge of the park where the road met the trees.<\/p>\n<p>Lights began to appear through the snowfall.<\/p>\n<p>One.<\/p>\n<p>Then two.<\/p>\n<p>Then more.<\/p>\n<p>Soft at first.<\/p>\n<p>Approaching slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur\u2019s breathing changed\u2014fear trying to return, but not fully finding its place anymore.<\/p>\n<p>Victor stayed steady beside her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re mine,\u201d he said simply.<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd they\u2019ve been looking for you for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lights grew closer now, cutting through the snow like warm threads in a frozen cloth.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur looked down at the children again.<\/p>\n<p>Still in her arms.<\/p>\n<p>Still alive.<\/p>\n<p>Still here.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice came out barely above a whisper.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur: \u201cI thought\u2026 no one would come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Victor didn\u2019t look away from the approaching lights.<\/p>\n<p>But his answer was immediate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomeone always comes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The first vehicle stopped at the edge of the park.<\/p>\n<p>Then another.<\/p>\n<p>Doors opened.<\/p>\n<p>Footsteps in snow.<\/p>\n<p>Approaching carefully.<\/p>\n<p>Not rushing her.<\/p>\n<p>Not breaking the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Arthur didn\u2019t move.<\/p>\n<p>But for the first time since the snow began falling\u2014<\/p>\n<p>she didn\u2019t feel like she was holding on alone anymore.<\/p>\n<p>And as the world slowly filled with quiet, arriving presence\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the park stopped feeling empty.<\/p>\n<p>It started feeling like something had finally found its way back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The snow kept falling, but the bench no longer felt like the edge of the world.
