Cold wind tugged softly at the edges of his brown vest, but he didn\u2019t seem to notice.<\/p>\n<p>For a moment\u2014<\/p>\n<p>neither of them spoke.<\/p>\n<p>Then quietly, almost embarrassed by the question, she looked down at the flowers.<\/p>\n<p>Woman (softly): \u201cThese are dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A faint smile touched the corner of the cowboy\u2019s mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Not mocking.<\/p>\n<p>Not amused.<\/p>\n<p>Just gentle.<\/p>\n<p>Cowboy (low, honest): \u201cNo, ma\u2019am.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced toward the snow-covered street beside them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey survived summer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wind moved softly between them again.<\/p>\n<p>Her fingers tightened around the bouquet.<\/p>\n<p>The brittle yellow petals trembled slightly in the cold.<\/p>\n<p>Woman (quiet): \u201cMost men would\u2019ve brought roses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cowboy: \u201cMost men don\u2019t notice what lasts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That hit her harder than she expected.<\/p>\n<p>The smile on her face weakened into something more emotional. More real.<\/p>\n<p>She lowered her eyes quickly, trying to hide it.<\/p>\n<p>But the cowboy had already seen.<\/p>\n<p>A horse snorted softly nearby beside the hitching rail.<\/p>\n<p>Somewhere farther down the street, a saloon door creaked open before closing again against the cold.<\/p>\n<p>Life continued quietly around them.<\/p>\n<p>But the space between them felt still.<\/p>\n<p>Separate from everything else.<\/p>\n<p>The woman carefully unfolded the small card still clutched in her hand.<\/p>\n<p>Snowflakes landed against the paper as she read the crooked handwriting again.<\/p>\n<p>For the woman who still stayed kind after the world stopped being kind to her.<\/p>\n<p>Her breathing caught.<\/p>\n<p>She looked up at him slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Woman (whispering): \u201cYou wrote this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy nodded once.<\/p>\n<p>Simple.<\/p>\n<p>Certain.<\/p>\n<p>Cowboy: \u201cTook me three tries.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the first time\u2014<\/p>\n<p>a real laugh escaped her.<\/p>\n<p>Soft.<\/p>\n<p>Shaky.<\/p>\n<p>Beautiful enough to make the tired cowboy lower his eyes for a second like he wasn\u2019t prepared for the sound.<\/p>\n<p>Snow gathered lightly on his shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>The woman stepped closer through the white-covered street.<\/p>\n<p>Close enough now to see the small scar near his jaw.<\/p>\n<p>The exhaustion in his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The nervousness he\u2019d hidden surprisingly well.<\/p>\n<p>Woman (quietly): \u201cWhy me?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy looked at her for a long moment.<\/p>\n<p>Like the answer deserved honesty.<\/p>\n<p>Cowboy (soft): \u201cBecause every time this town looked past you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pause.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2026you still looked at people kindly anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The winter wind softened.<\/p>\n<p>The bouquet rested safely against her chest now.<\/p>\n<p>No longer something dead.<\/p>\n<p>Something chosen.<\/p>\n<p>And standing together beneath the falling snow\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the lonely little town no longer felt quite so cold anymore.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Snow continued falling in soft silence.
