{"id":3316,"date":"2026-05-19T13:38:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T08:08:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/storytimes.online\/?p=3316"},"modified":"2026-05-19T13:39:11","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T08:09:11","slug":"part-2-the-wolf-that-refused-to-leave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/storytimes.online\/?p=3316","title":{"rendered":"PART 2: The Wolf That Refused to Leave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The storm swallowed every sound except the wind.<\/p>\n<p>Snow whipped violently between the trees while the massive wolf stood motionless over the sleeping boy.<\/p>\n<p>Its breath rose in slow clouds through the frozen air.<\/p>\n<p>One hunter tightened his grip on the rifle.<\/p>\n<p>Another slowly stepped backward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t provoke it,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n<p>The wolf\u2019s glowing eyes never left them.<\/p>\n<p>Not aggressive.<\/p>\n<p>Not afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Watching.<\/p>\n<p>Measuring.<\/p>\n<p>The little boy stirred softly beneath the pine tree, bundled against the wolf\u2019s thick fur for warmth.<\/p>\n<p>Alive.<\/p>\n<p>Because of it.<\/p>\n<p>A rescuer lowered her lantern slightly, trying to see through the blizzard.<\/p>\n<p>Then she noticed something strange.<\/p>\n<p>The wolf\u2019s side was stained dark beneath the snow.<\/p>\n<p>Blood.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s injured\u2026\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>The animal shifted instantly at her voice, placing itself more firmly between the hunters and the child.<\/p>\n<p>Protective.<\/p>\n<p>Even wounded.<\/p>\n<p>Lightning flashed faintly behind the storm clouds overhead.<\/p>\n<p>And for one brief second\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the rescuers saw deep claw marks carved across the wolf\u2019s shoulder, as if it had fought something else in the forest before they arrived.<\/p>\n<p>The lead hunter swallowed hard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat thing could kill all of us if it wanted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it hadn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, it stayed beside the boy.<\/p>\n<p>Guarding him.<\/p>\n<p>The child slowly opened his eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Weak.<br \/>\nCold.<br \/>\nExhausted.<\/p>\n<p>Then he saw the rifles pointed toward the wolf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo!\u201d he cried instantly, grabbing the animal\u2019s frozen fur. \u201cDon\u2019t hurt him!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The wolf lowered its head slightly at the sound of the boy\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n<p>Calm now.<\/p>\n<p>The hunters froze in disbelief.<\/p>\n<p>Because the creature responded to the child like family.<\/p>\n<p>The little boy looked up through tears and snow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe kept me warm all night,\u201d he whispered shakily. \u201cSomething else was out there in the storm.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Silence spread through the forest.<\/p>\n<p>The rescuers exchanged uneasy glances.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>from somewhere deeper in the blizzard\u2014<\/p>\n<p>a distant howl echoed back.<\/p>\n<p>Not the wolf beside them.<\/p>\n<p>Something larger.<\/p>\n<p>Something answering from the white darkness beyond the trees.<\/p>\n<p>The massive gray wolf immediately turned toward the sound.<\/p>\n<p>Its entire body stiffened.<\/p>\n<p>Ready again.<\/p>\n<p>Not to attack the hunters\u2014<\/p>\n<p>but to protect the boy one more time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The storm swallowed every sound except the wind.
