{"id":3281,"date":"2026-05-19T13:09:35","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T07:39:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/storytimes.online\/?p=3281"},"modified":"2026-05-19T13:09:35","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T07:39:35","slug":"part-2-the-engine-that-shouldnt-exist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/storytimes.online\/?p=3281","title":{"rendered":"PART 2: The Engine That Shouldn\u2019t Exist"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The entire bar went silent.<\/p>\n<p>No pool balls moved.<\/p>\n<p>No glasses touched wood.<\/p>\n<p>Only rain hammering against the windows while thunder rolled low above the highway.<\/p>\n<p>The older biker stayed frozen.<\/p>\n<p>The tiny silver key rested in his palm.<\/p>\n<p>The scratched dog tag suddenly felt heavier than metal ever should.<\/p>\n<p>Outside\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the motorcycle engine idled.<\/p>\n<p>Slow.<\/p>\n<p>Familiar.<\/p>\n<p>Impossible.<\/p>\n<p>One biker near the pool table shifted uneasily.<\/p>\n<p>Another slowly lowered his drink.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody said a word.<\/p>\n<p>Because every man in that room knew the sound.<\/p>\n<p>And every one of them had buried its rider years ago.<\/p>\n<p>The little girl looked up at him.<\/p>\n<p>Rainwater still dripped from her sleeves onto the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Child (small, confused): \u201cYou know him\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The older biker swallowed hard.<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened beneath his gray beard.<\/p>\n<p>Man (quiet, shaken): \u201cKid\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced once toward the rain-covered doorway.<\/p>\n<p>Then back to the dog tag.<\/p>\n<p>The name scratched into the metal caught weak neon light.<\/p>\n<p>His breathing slowed.<\/p>\n<p>Almost unwilling.<\/p>\n<p>Man (low): \u201cYour father died eight years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The girl shook her head immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Hard.<\/p>\n<p>Certain.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh tears mixed with rain across her face.<\/p>\n<p>Child (whispering): \u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her tiny hand tightened around the soaked photograph.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me to come here if anything went wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thunder cracked louder.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the engine outside stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Completely.<\/p>\n<p>The silence afterward felt wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy.<\/p>\n<p>Like something had just arrived.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody in the bar moved.<\/p>\n<p>One biker quietly reached beneath the counter.<\/p>\n<p>Another stood straighter near the pool table.<\/p>\n<p>Instinct.<\/p>\n<p>Memory.<\/p>\n<p>Fear.<\/p>\n<p>The older biker slowly closed his hand around the silver key.<\/p>\n<p>Then something caught his eye.<\/p>\n<p>Through the rain-streaked front window\u2014<\/p>\n<p>a motorcycle sat beneath the flickering neon sign.<\/p>\n<p>Black.<\/p>\n<p>Weathered.<\/p>\n<p>Motionless.<\/p>\n<p>Water rolled down chrome.<\/p>\n<p>And hanging from the handlebar\u2014<\/p>\n<p>an old wolf charm swayed in the storm.<\/p>\n<p>Color drained from his face.<\/p>\n<p>Man (barely above a whisper): \u201cNo damn way\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The little girl stepped closer.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice smaller now.<\/p>\n<p>More afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Child: \u201cHe said you were his brother.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The biker looked at her.<\/p>\n<p>Really looked.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time.<\/p>\n<p>The shape of her eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The stubborn way she stood despite shaking.<\/p>\n<p>Something familiar hit him all at once.<\/p>\n<p>Something painful.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>The back door of the bar slammed open.<\/p>\n<p>Cold wind rushed inside.<\/p>\n<p>Rain scattered across the floor.<\/p>\n<p>A tall shadow stood in the doorway.<\/p>\n<p>Broad shoulders.<\/p>\n<p>Dark coat dripping rain.<\/p>\n<p>Face hidden beneath a black hat.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody breathed.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody moved.<\/p>\n<p>Then the figure stepped forward\u2014<\/p>\n<p>and the older biker\u2019s hand began shaking.<\/p>\n<p>Because hanging against the stranger\u2019s chest\u2014<\/p>\n<p>was the missing half of the exact same dog tag.<\/p>\n<p>And suddenly\u2014<\/p>\n<p>the dead man everyone feared speaking about\u2026<\/p>\n<p>didn\u2019t look dead anymore.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The entire bar went silent.
