{"id":3263,"date":"2026-05-19T11:46:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-19T06:16:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/storytimes.online\/?p=3263"},"modified":"2026-05-19T11:46:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-19T06:16:07","slug":"part-2-the-promise-in-the-storm","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/storytimes.online\/?p=3263","title":{"rendered":"PART 2: The Promise in the Storm"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Rain battered the roof harder.<\/p>\n<p>Heavy.<\/p>\n<p>Relentless.<\/p>\n<p>Like the storm outside had no intention of ending.<\/p>\n<p>But inside the chicken coop\u2014<\/p>\n<p>something had shifted.<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy stayed where he was.<\/p>\n<p>Lantern resting low beside him, warm light spilling across damp straw and trembling faces.<\/p>\n<p>He didn\u2019t move closer.<\/p>\n<p>Didn\u2019t rush.<\/p>\n<p>The toddlers stayed pressed against the woman\u2019s chest, tiny hands gripping the torn fabric of her dress.<\/p>\n<p>Her question lingered between them.<\/p>\n<p>You\u2026 you promise?<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy removed his black hat slowly.<\/p>\n<p>Rainwater dripped from the brim onto the muddy floor.<\/p>\n<p>His tired eyes never left hers.<\/p>\n<p>Cowboy (quiet, steady): \u201cMa\u2019am\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Thunder rolled overhead.<\/p>\n<p>But his voice stayed calm.<\/p>\n<p>Grounded.<\/p>\n<p>Like something built to survive storms.<\/p>\n<p>Cowboy: \u201cI don\u2019t make promises I can\u2019t keep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The lantern flickered softly.<\/p>\n<p>One of the toddlers sniffled, peeking out from beneath her arm with red, frightened eyes.<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy noticed.<\/p>\n<p>Without a word\u2014<\/p>\n<p>he slowly reached into the pocket of his worn coat.<\/p>\n<p>The woman tensed instantly.<\/p>\n<p>Fear flashing across her face again.<\/p>\n<p>But instead of a weapon\u2014<\/p>\n<p>he pulled out a folded cloth bundle.<\/p>\n<p>Carefully\u2014<\/p>\n<p>he set it down in the straw halfway between them.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh bread.<\/p>\n<p>Wrapped tightly to stay warm.<\/p>\n<p>The smell spread quietly through the coop.<\/p>\n<p>The toddlers stared.<\/p>\n<p>Hungry enough to stop crying.<\/p>\n<p>The younger one whispered weakly.<\/p>\n<p>Toddler (small voice): \u201cMama\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman\u2019s breath caught.<\/p>\n<p>Her eyes filled again.<\/p>\n<p>Cowboy (soft): \u201cBeen riding since sunset.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He glanced toward the children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFigured somebody might need supper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Outside\u2014<\/p>\n<p>lightning flashed through the cracks in the wood.<\/p>\n<p>For a second, the storm lit the entire coop silver.<\/p>\n<p>Then darkness again.<\/p>\n<p>The woman hesitated.<\/p>\n<p>Still afraid.<\/p>\n<p>Still unsure.<\/p>\n<p>But hunger won where fear couldn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<p>Slowly\u2014<\/p>\n<p>she reached for the bread.<\/p>\n<p>Hands trembling.<\/p>\n<p>One toddler immediately clung to it with tiny fingers.<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy finally stood straighter.<\/p>\n<p>His expression changed.<\/p>\n<p>Less gentle now.<\/p>\n<p>More alert.<\/p>\n<p>He turned briefly toward the door.<\/p>\n<p>Listening.<\/p>\n<p>The rain.<\/p>\n<p>The wind.<\/p>\n<p>Then\u2014<\/p>\n<p>something else.<\/p>\n<p>Distant.<\/p>\n<p>Faint.<\/p>\n<p>Hoofbeats.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple.<\/p>\n<p>Coming fast.<\/p>\n<p>His jaw tightened instantly.<\/p>\n<p>The warmth disappeared from his face.<\/p>\n<p>Cowboy (low, serious): \u201cHow long ago did they find you?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The woman froze.<\/p>\n<p>Fear flooded back into her eyes so quickly it felt practiced.<\/p>\n<p>Her voice cracked.<\/p>\n<p>Woman (terrified whisper): \u201cBefore sunset\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cowboy looked toward the storm again.<\/p>\n<p>Already calculating.<\/p>\n<p>Already knowing.<\/p>\n<p>His hand dropped near the revolver resting at his side.<\/p>\n<p>Cowboy (quiet): \u201cThen we ain\u2019t got much time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The toddlers pulled closer to their mother.<\/p>\n<p>Thunder shook the coop.<\/p>\n<p>And somewhere beyond the rain\u2014<\/p>\n<p>horses were getting closer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rain battered the roof harder.
